Hulu’s hit show Only Murders in the Building premiered to exceptional reviews in August 2021. Due to its success, during the airing of its second season, Hulu promptly renewed it for a third season.
And it seems some exciting new characters will be joining the cast of the show in the upcoming chapter.
For those of you that don’t know, the show follows Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin), who form an unlikely friendship due to their shared passion for forensic investigations. When a strange death takes place in the building they live in, the trio joins forces to solve the case and find the perpetrator responsible.
Speaking about the show, prior to season 2 hitting screens, co-creator John Hoffman told The Hollywood Reporter: “I think ultimately it’s a show about these three characters and the characters of New York, and breaking through your isolated little world and trying to fight this injustice with people who are very unexpected in your world, and [who] you might find yourself fighting for.”
Following the release of season 2, which saw the trio attempt to clear their name after becoming suspects in another murder, Martin and Short both received Emmy nominations for their roles.
“Only Murders in the Building is the true crown jewel of our slate. Its appeal across generations, the intersection of humour and heart, and its truly original approach are a hallmark of and testament to Dan [Fogelman], John [Hoffman], Steve [Martin], Martin [Short], and Selena [Gomez]’s work,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s content marketing president, said in a press release last year.
“We are grateful to be able to continue telling the stories of Charles, Oliver and Mabel to viewers that have consistently shown us they crave more of this story.”
It’s clear the show has gained a lot of fans since it first hit screens, and we’ve got lots more mysteries to look forward to in the upcoming season, but even more exciting is the news that Meryl Streep will be joining the cast.
Taking to Twitter to share the news, Steve Martin wrote: “The filming of Season 3 of ‘Only Murders in the Building‘ has begun! A cast to dream of,” alongside a black and white photo of Streep and the OMITB gang.
The post received thousands of likes, before the show’s Twitter account replied to his post, writing: “It is an HONOR to have Meryl in our building!”
Co-star Gomez could not contain her excitement at the casting news of Streep either, and took to Instagram to celebrate. She posted a video featuring the whole group, with a caption that read: “I could cry season 3 is coming!”
Fans of the show quickly took to social media to share their thoughts on the news, with one writing: “Only LEGENDS in the building!”
While another added: “MOST ICONIC CAST EVER I’M SORRY.”
“Be still my heart!!! I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited by a collaboration,” a third gushed.
