People Are Saying It’s A Crime This ‘Oscar Worthy’ Movie Isn’t Talked About Anymore

An “Oscar-worthy” movie, described as the best movie of 2013, has started to get popular once again, and viewers are shocked it’s not been given the recognition it deserves.

Aaron Guzikowski wrote the screenplay for Prisoners, which came out in 2013, and was directed by Denis Villeneuve. Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, and Paul Dano are among the ensemble cast members of the movie. The story revolves around the kidnapping of two young girls in Pennsylvania and the subsequent hunt for them.

The script by Guzikowski was one of those well-known yet unproduced scripts in Hollywood for a long time, and if you can guess how it ends, you’re lying. It drives cliched, gory serial killer cliches in a few fresh directions. And by appropriating the vengeful-parent narrative, it establishes its art-house credentials, which bagged the movie a nomination for Best Achievement in Cinematography at the Oscars.

The synopsis reads: “Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) faces a parent’s worst nightmare when his 6-year-old daughter, Anna, and her friend go missing. The only lead is an old motorhome that had been parked on their street. The head of the investigation, Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), arrests the driver (Paul Dano), but a lack of evidence forces Loki to release his only suspect. Dover, knowing that his daughter’s life is at stake, decides that he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands.”

It clearly has a large fan base, despite many claiming it is “underrated,” one social media user wrote: “Lots of fans of the movie in the comments but no one shares the name of it. I think we have nailed down the problem as to why no one talks about it. ‘There was this really great movie with an A list cast and INCREDIBLE visuals you should see.’ ‘Yeah? What’s it called?’ ‘Oh, I can’t say it. But it’s amazing and no one ever talks about it. More people should have seen it.’”

While another commented: “This is a great movie in the sense that ALL the actors did amazing. It is, however, not a movie I would watch more than a handful of times at MOST. Especially having children and girls.. it’s too hard to watch.

Prisoners is a seriously underrated movie. Hugh Jackman is also amazing in this and gives a very realistic portrayal of how any dad would act during this situation. Highly recommend!” a third said.

At the time, fans were outraged that it didn’t receive an Oscar nod for Best Picture and that Hugh Jackman didn’t get any kind of recognition for his role, which some claim was better than Les Miserables.

One fan took to Movie Forums to share their thoughts on the movie, writing: “I know Prisoners was released out of ‘OSCAR season’, and that is half the problem…but for me it was the best movie of 2013, and I am astonished that it was not nominated among those in the Best Picture Category.

“Also, I’m so disappointed for Hugh Jackman, who delivered such an incredible performance and will receive no acclaim simply due to the time of the year it was released and the fact that the studio didn’t spend millions on a campaign for him to win an Oscar unlike American Hustle and Wolf of Wall Street have on Bale and Leo. (though leo deserves it too).

“Just wondered if anyone shared my thoughts that Prisoners deserved more acclaim?”

What did you make of the movie?
