The Last of Us star Melanie Lynskey has hit back at America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry over her body-shaming comments.

This all started when Adrianne Curry shared a photo of Lynskey on Twitter, along with a critical comment about her character, Kathleen: “her body says life of luxury…not post-apocalyptic warlord. where is Linda Hamilton when you need her?” she said in reference to Hamilton’s Terminator character.

Kathleen, played by Lynskey, is a unique character developed especially for HBO’s TV adaptation, who leads a revolutionary organisation in the struggle against the FEDRA military authority.

Speaking about working on the show, Lynskey wrote:  “I understand that some people are mad that I’m not the typical casting for this role. That’s thrilling to me. Other than the moments after action is called, when you feel like you’re actually in someone else’s body, the most exciting part of my job is subverting expectations.”

It didn’t take long for Lynskey to notice Curry’s comment, and she hit back sharing a screenshot of the models since-deleted post.

“Firstly- this is a photo from my cover shoot for InStyle magazine, not a still from HBO’s The Last Of Us,” she wrote in response. “And I’m playing a person who meticulously planned & executed an overthrow of FEDRA.”

“I am supposed to be SMART, ma’m,” she added. “I don’t need to be muscly. That’s what henchmen are for.”

After this, Curry tried to double down on her criticism, writing in a separate tweet that the actress “cropped out what I said about her perfect hourglass frame being the most desirable to men,” and called Lynskey “manipulative.” She also hit back saying: “actors can’t allow people to not like their characters? I am DONE.”

Curry’s first critique seems to have prompted Lynskey to respond with a series of tweets regarding the challenges experienced by women in businesses with a male predominance.

“Women, and especially women in leadership positions, are scrutinized incessantly,” Lynskey wrote in another.

“I was excited at the idea of playing a woman who had, in a desperate and tragic time, jumped into a role she had never planned on having and nobody else had planned on her having, and then she actually got shit done,” she wrote in a separate tweet.

Last month, audiences were first introduced to the HBO Max series, which is the first live-action adaptation since the video game wowed audiences way back in 2013.

Just like the games, the series is set in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by an unstoppable, brain-eating, fungal outbreak that transforms humans into cannibals.

The writers have been commended for honouring the original source material, which rapidly gathered a devoted fan base when it first came out. The engaging storylines, impressive visuals, and music propelled it to its massive success.

For those who haven’t watched the show, Joel, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, is a ruthless smuggler who is responsible for transporting the young teen Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) to a medical facility situated on the opposite side of the country after it turns out she’s immune to the infection, leading him to believe she could hold the cure to the deadly parasite.

The Last of Us premiered on January 15, and has been met with rave reviews from both critics and fans, resulting in an unbelievable score of 99 percent on Rotten Tomatoes when it first hit screens.
