Sam Smith has been in the headlines a lot recently, after being repeatedly misgendered, and Noel Gallagher is the latest to refer to the nonbinary singer as “him.”
In a foul-mouthed tirade, Gallagher not only misgendered Sam Smith, but he also called them a “f***ing idiot” while discussing the “current state of pop music” on Kink, a Dutch radio station .
The news comes just weeks after multiple TV hosts misgendered the star.
Richard Madeley ruffled a few feathers on ITV’s Good Morning Britain when he referred to Sam Smith as “he,” followed by a misstep by The One Show‘s host Alex Jones. Then for a third time, Sir Bob Geldof, who appeared as a guest on This Morning, made the same mistake.
As many fans will already know, Smith uses they/them pronouns and came out as non-binary back in 2019.
Smith shockingly admitted to having encountered harassment and abuse after coming out. Opening up to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, they shared that there haven’t been any problems when it comes to their personal life, but the general public hasn’t been as supportive.
They explained: “I think all the only negatives in the struggle have been in my public life and my job. And just the amount of hate and s***tness that came my way was just exhausting.
“It was in the f***ing news. Someone spat at me in the street. It’s crazy. What I find hard about it is it’s like, if that’s happening to me and I’m famous, I’m a pop star, can you imagine what other kids, like queer kids are feeling?
“And it’s just so sad that we’re in 2023 and it’s still happening. It’s exhausting and especially in England.”
But despite all the hate, Smith admitted that they feel a sense of relief that they can finally embody who they feel they’ve “always been.”
“My love life has become better from it. I feel lovable. I feel comfortable in my skin, but I wear what I want to wear.”
“Since changing my pronouns, it felt like a coming home. I wish I knew what the words were when I was in school because I would’ve identified as that in school,” they said. “Because it is who I am and it’s who I’ve always been.”
So hearing multiple TV hosts get his gender wrong, has riled a lot of people up. It started with GMB host Richard Madeley, who used the wrong pronouns while talking about the singer.
Madeley and Susanna Reid were discussing Sam Smith’s music video for their new track, I’m Not Here To Make Friends, the latest single from Smith’s album, Gloria, which was released last week.
In the clips shown on the show, Smith can be seen dancing suggestively while wearing what some have deemed “over-s**ualized” outfits, such as suspenders and n****e tassels.
It was during this segment that Madeley referred to Smith as “he,” Reid then interrupted to point out his mistake, after which Richard apologised.
But this wasn’t the only time he made the mistake. Later on, when discussing the “over-s**ualization” of the music video with a guest, he also referred to them using the wrong pronouns, after which they had to correct him.
Smith was then misgendered once again during an appearance on The One Show, by host Alex Jones.
The celebrity disclosed during their appearance on the BBC program that their secret interest is fishing, which they hope to develop further, adding that they’d like to become a ‘fisher-them.’
But despite making a distinction to use ‘them,’ Alex Jones went on to ask if Smith would like to be “a fly fisherman.”
Smith then said: “I’d be any type of fisher-them.
“I think I would like to, one day, I’d just like to end my days fishing. Like sitting on a bank.”
They added: “I do it on the sea and I do it on lakes. I’ve never done it alone, someone’s almost taught me.”
Sadly that isn’t the end of the conversation because Smith was then misgendered again by Sir Bob Geldof during his recent appearance on This Morning.
The political activist called Smith “he” multiple times on the show, which he appeared on to discuss the 40th anniversary of Band Aid.
Bob said: “Sam Smith, I remember him at the microphone had his eyes closed, and he was singing away to the song, and I said ‘Sam, they’re not the words’. He goes, ‘oh yeah, sorry’.
“Because we had re-written the words for I think the Ebola crisis in west Africa.
“And he says ‘sorry’, so off he goes, he closes his eyes again and he starts singing the original words. I said ‘Sam’, and he goes ‘oh yes, sorry, every year in school I have to sing this song.’”
Holly then says: “It’s go engrained,” but both Phil and Holly fail to correct the singer.
It didn’t take long for outraged viewers to share their thoughts on the mistake online, with one writing: “Holly and Phil should have pulled him up on that. Ridiculous.”
While another commented: “He’s on national TV and speaking about Sam Smith. You’d think someone would brief him on Sam’s gender identity or at least correct him. Painful watch.”
And now, even Noel Gallagher has chimed in, however, it doesn’t look like he mistakenly misgendered the star.
He said: “Music has become quite fractured and chart music is dominated by pop. Pop music is alright if the pop stars are cool. Sadly the stars of today are f***ing idiots.”
When questioned about who he meant by “uncool,” Noel said, “Sam Smith.”
After being asked why he thought that, the singer replied: “Look at him!”
And it seems that a lot of people agree with his comments, with one writing: “I don’t often agree with what Noel says, but I’m afraid on this occasion, I definitely do!”
While another said: “I used to like Sam smith but he’s turned into a cartoon character and not a good one at that. Identify as what you like but that’s YOUR choice.”
However, a third commented: “You know why are people (the collective) so mean? No matter whether you like the human being, this “Person” or not, Sam has an amazing voice and I always thought it was about the music and let’s face it Noel has not really been the greatest role model with his past.”
