Oscar Nominee Tems Breaks Silence After Her ‘Rude’ Outfit Received Backlash

Tems has finally addressed the criticism of her extravagant Oscars gown, posting a picture to her Instagram with a pretty unbothered caption.

The Oscar nominated singer went viral on social media after her flamboyant outfit caused outrage among viewers who labeled her “rude and obnoxious.”

A handful of artists took to the stage during the event, with all five songs up for best original song being performed, including Rihanna’s Lift Me Up, and Naatu Naatu, which was the first song from an Indian movie to receive an Oscar nomination in the category.

And although she didn’t win, Tems’ has definitely got the public’s attention.

Now, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented the 2022 film nominees for the 95th Academy Awards this Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles… and what a night it was.

At the ceremony, the 23 category winners were announced, with Four awards going to German movie All Quiet on the Western Front, including Oscars for best original score, production design, cinematography, and international feature.

Best visual effects went to Avatar: The Way of Water, while Best Sound went to Top Gun: Maverick.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won for costume design, while Navalny won for outstanding documentary film.

While the main event was undoubtedly the awards ceremony, the performances by the five nominees for Best Original Song got everyone talking.

Sofia Carson sang Diane Warren’s hit Applause from the movie, Tell It Like a Woman, while Stephanie Hsu, David Byrne, and Son Lux performed This Is a Life from EEAAO.

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava performed Naatu Naatu from RRR, and Rihanna performed Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

And Lady Gaga stole all our hearts when she came on stage bare-faced in a simple T-shirt and ripped jeans performing the song Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick.

Despite being in the limelight for her hit track ‘Lift Me Up’, alongside Rihanna, it was Tems’ outfit that got everyone’s attention.

Tems’ stunning dress was complemented by a large headdress that seemed to obstruct the vision of those seated behind her. And it didn’t take long for people on social media to criticise her unpractical attire.

One Twitter user wrote: “And the Oscar for the Most Ridiculous Dress worn by a SELFISH, RUDE DIVA goes to …

“#TEMS  for obstructing people’s view in her role in

“LOOK AT ME!  LOOK AT ME!”

While another commented: “Tems’ outfit to the 2023 Oscars is good but inappropriate due to the intricate headpiece; She should’ve swapped seats with someone at the back. Hopefully she learns from this.”

Tems actually spoke out about the dress to Harper’s Bazaar before the event, revealing: “Two years ago, I would’ve said no to this dress, but it’s my first Oscars – I am going to go all out. I really wanted to make the most of the day.

“The dress is also my way of celebrating my work and the people around me, celebrating my country, and celebrating the people that are rooting for me. This dress says ‘Yes, yes, I am here!’”

And now the singer has addressed the backlash in her most recent Instagram post, she simply wrote: “Uh Ohh!” alongside a series of stunning snaps of her in the aforementioned gown.
