Skincare Brand Dove Slams The Whale For Using Fat Suit Rather Than Obese Actor

After The Whale won the award for best hair and makeup, the skincare company Dove declared its outrage to the Academy Awards.

As some will already be aware, Brendan Fraser had to wear a 300lb fat suit for the role, and it seems the skincare company disagrees with the recent win.

Now, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented the 2022 film nominees for the 95th Academy Awards this Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles… and what a night it was.

At the ceremony, the 23 category winners were announced, with Four awards going to German movie All Quiet on the Western Front, including Oscars for best original score, production design, cinematography, and international feature.

Best visual effects went to Avatar: The Way of Water, while Best Sound went to Top Gun: Maverick.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won for costume design, while Navalny won for outstanding documentary film.

Pinocchio, directed by Guillermo del Toro, received the prize for best-animated feature, and Sarah Polley’s Women Talking took home the prize for best-adapted screenplay.

However, the best-performing film had to be Everything Everywhere All at Once. It had the most 2023 Oscar nominations (11) going into the program, winning seven.

Not only did it win best picture, but it also won three acting awards for Michelle Yeoh as best leading actress, Ke Huy Quan as best supporting actor, and Jamie Lee Curtis as best supporting actress.

The movie also took home awards for best original script, best director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), and best film editing (Paul Rogers).

But arguably the most emotional part of the night was when The Whale won Brendan Fraser the award for best actor in a leading role.

The movie was up for a lot of awards on Sunday night, and understandably, the team also won best hair and makeup.

Something that skincare brand Dove seemed to oppose. The company liked a tweet online by another social media user that was also outraged by the win, they wrote: “So disappointing that The Whale won the Oscar for the best hair and makeup.”

They added: “Fat suits are harmful – they are not your opportunity to win awards. Our identity is not your costume. Cast fat actors to play fat characters.”

Dove later replied: “Stop giving fat suits awards. We want better representation in Hollywood.”

And it seems like many agree, with another commenting: “The Oscar for best makeup going to the construction of a fat suit on The Whale is blatantly disrespectful. And to blast this specific image of a fake fat body on display behind the award is inconceivable.”

While a second said: “I don’t appreciate that the makeup team who created a fat suit just won an Oscar and that is because we need to have better stories with fat actors and not thinner actors in fat suits.”

However, others brought up an interview where Fraser revealed more about the suit, he said: “It’s important to say this because there are those who live with this disease.

“I felt empowered to be their voice and to be as honest as I could and as authentic as I could in the portrayal. Look, my weight has been all over the map.”

Fraser continued: “I put on weight to play this role, and it wasn’t enough — so the body had to go on top of that, and the two worked together.”
