AI is opening a whole new world of possibilities for the modern world, but finally it has achieved what we have all been waiting for: a true representation of Chris Rock’s perspective when he was slapped by Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars.
But, in case you’ve no idea what we’re talking about, let’s rewind.
The drama first unfolded during the 2022 Oscars, when Jada’s husband, actor Will Smith, punched Rock on stage after he made a joke about her.
It’s safe to say, it was an event that got everyone talking for weeks.
Rock was hosting the Oscars when he made a G.I. Jane joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, which resulted in the infamous slap.
“Jada, can’t wait for G.I. Jane 2,” Rock said referring to the G.I. Jane movie that sees actress, Demi Moore, shave her head.
His joke appeared to refer to Jada’s shaven hairdo after she opened up about her experience of hair loss from alopecia.
At first, Will appeared to laugh off Rock’s comment while Jada looked very unimpressed.
But, after the cameras cut away from the couple and back to Rock, Will stormed onto the stage where he slapped Rock.
Will then returned to his seat where he shouted profanities at the comedian.
After this, Will was banned from the Academy Awards for ten years. According to TMZ, John Bailey, CEO, and Academy President said: “The Board [of Governors] has decided, for a period of ten years, from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”
However, it appears that the slap receiver addressed the memorable moment via his own platform.
Rock starred in Netflix’s first-ever live streamed event, a comedy special titled Selective Outrage.
In the special, Rock says: “You never know who might get triggered. You know what people say, they say, ‘words hurt’.
“Anybody that says words hurt has never been punched in the face.”
He adds: “People are like, ‘Did it hurt?’ It still hurts! I got ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears.”
He also went on to discuss Jada’s affair, saying: “His wife was f***ing her son’s friend. I normally would not talk about this s***…
“I have no idea why two talented people would do something that f***ing lowdown.
“We’ve all been cheated on. Everybody in here has been cheated on. None of us has ever been interviewed by the person that cheated on us… on television. She hurt him way more than he hurt me.”
After seeing Rock’s performance, a lot of people criticised him on social media for his “disgusting” remarks. And it seems that Jada’s camp isn’t best pleased either…
Sources close to the actress spoke to People about Rock’s comments, and declared that he was simply “obsessed” with her.
“Jada has had no part in all of this other than being heckled,” they said. “Chris is obsessed with her and that’s been going on for almost 30 years.”
They continued: “Look where he chose to film his Netflix special. Her hometown [Baltimore]. Obsessed.
“Back in 2016 she helped start a movement with the Academy Awards by questioning why there are so few Black members, and Chris took it to this?”
Jada was a prominent supporter of the #OscarsSoWhite movement that year, which also saw Will fail to be nominated for his role in Concussion.
This is in reference to one of Rock’s jokes from the special: “Years ago, his wife said I should quit the Oscars. I shouldn’t host ’cause her man didn’t get nominated for Concussion. And then he gives me a f***ing concussion.”
The source countered this, saying: “She never asked Chris to not host the Oscars ever. She publicly said in a Facebook post at the time Chris would be a great Oscars host and is perfect for the job.”
The source added that they were “shocked” by the number of times Rock referred to her as a “b****”. They concluded by saying that Jada is currently focused on her book, which is set to come out later this year.
But when it comes to Will, it seems he’s taken things to heart.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, a source close to Will said the actor felt that Netflix made a “disgraceful” decision by running the special. In other words, Will doesn’t seem to be enjoying Rock’s jokes very much.
They said: “Will is embarrassed and hurt by what Chris said about him and his family in his Netflix special. He didn’t watch it, but he had people tell him what Chris said … It’s everywhere when you look online and on social media, so Will and Jada have seen comments about it … Will apologised to Chris and would like for Chris to let it go.”
But now, what everyone has been waiting for has finally come to fruition, and someone has used AI to recreate the scenes that Chris Rock saw when Smith slapped him.
Twitter user @heyBarsee created a thread of images using AI to show the dramatic moment, and the results are hilarious. Take a look for yourself below.
