An interview where Anya Taylor-Joy is asked if she is self-conscious because her eyes are ‘so far apart’ has recently resurfaced, and it has left fans heartbroken.
The twenty-seven-year-old revealed that for a time she stopped looking in mirrors as a result of comments she had received on her appearance.
Now, Taylor-Joy is one of the biggest stars to make it in recent years.
At the 2021 Golden Globes ceremony, the star won the award for best actress in a miniseries or television film for her role in the hit Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit.
In her victory, she beat out fellow nominees, Cate Blanchett, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Nicole Kidman, and Shira Haas.
She was also up for a second award — best actress in a motion picture comedy or musical – for her role in Emma, though Rosamund Pike swept up that award for her performance in I Care a Lot.
In her acceptance speech, Taylor-Joy was visibly overcome with emotion, “I would love to thank Netflix… For letting us make the show we wanted to make. It’s obviously wonderful that everyone’s seen the show. I would do this project again and again and again; I learned so much,” she said.
Adding: “Thank you to the audiences that have watched it and supported the characters. It meant the world.”
Despite her success in the film industry, a resurfaced interview with the star recently revealed that she has struggled with her appearance before.
“I can definitely remember when Facebook was a thing and I was never aware that my eyes were far apart and then someone tagged me in a picture with a fish and they were like, ‘This is you ’cause your eyes are like here,” she revealed, per Glamour.
“And I was really upset about it and I didn’t enjoy it and I kind of stopped looking in mirrors for a very long time.
“I still don’t really spend a lot of time in front of mirrors because I don’t really have to deal with my face. Unfortunately, y’all do.”
The news comes after videos of Taylor-Joy speaking Spanish left fans mindblown.
Taylor-Joy, who has Argentine ancestry and lived in Argentina for several years as a child, identifies as White Latina, and spoke about how being Argentine shaped her in a video for Netflix’s Con Todo account, posted in November 2020.
She has also discussed her Latina identity and the “weird mash-up” of growing up in Argentina before immigrating to the United Kindom in a profile by Vulture in 2018.
She explained: “I’m aware of the fact I don’t look like a typical Latin person, and that’s not fair. I don’t want to be someone that you can just sub in for that role when I’m really white and blonde.”
Many fans are still unaware of Taylor-Joy’s South American upbringing. So much so, that videos of the star speaking in her native tongue are going viral all over the internet!
She is currently on the press circuit promoting the Super Mario Bros movie, in which she plays Princess Peach. As part of the promotion, she has filmed certain clips in Spanish, and it’s sent the internet wild.
One fan said: “Just learned that Anya Taylor-Joy is partially of Argentinian descent but speaks perfect Spanish, deep Argentinian accent and all.”
Another wrote: “ANYA TAYLOR JOY IS LATINA???? AND SHE SPEAKS FLUENT SPANISH???? SHE’S FROM ARGENTINA????”
While a third said: “My current obsession is Anya Taylor-Joy speaking Spanish. That is all.”
