Terrifying Horror Movie That’s Banned In New Zealand Goes Viral On TikTok

A terrifying horror movie from 2011 has viewers all shook up after its reemergence thanks to its virality on TikTok.

The movie in question is titled Megan Is Missing, and it has actually been banned in New Zealand, where the Office of Film and literature Certification deemed it to be ‘injurious to the public good’.

Directed by Michael Goi, the movie was originally released as a low budget indie back in 2006, but was given a full release in 2011 thanks to Anchor Bay Films. However, since 2020, the movie has seen an incredible resurgence thanks to its popularity on TikTok.

The synopsis reads: “Megan Stewart, 14, and her best friend Amy Herman, 13, though opposites in personality, are best friends.

“Megan carries the front of being the most popular girl in school, but this masks a lifestyle of hard partying, drugs, alcohol and indiscriminate sex. Amy, unpopular and socially awkward, clings to her relationship with Megan as a lifeline to social acceptance.

“Together, these two young girls forge a deep friendship based on their mutual needs. The two girls regularly communicate by web chat cameras or cell phone, and even meet boys online.

It continues: “As Megan seeks friends who are different from her usual posse of hanger-ons, she is introduced by a friend online to a 17 year-old boy named Josh in a chat room. Megan and Josh bond quickly, leaving Amy feeling a bit left out. One day, Megan goes to meet Josh in person, and she is never seen again. Amy launches into a concentrated effort to find her friend.

“As the media swirls around the story of Megan’s disappearance, Amy discovers the horrifying truth about what happened to her friend.

“Based on research into seven actual cases of child abduction, MEGAN IS MISSING is an uncompromising, gut-wrenching view of the world children live in today. Harrowing in its realism, the film uses only fact-based incidences to depict the lives of ordinary kids walking in the midst of extraordinary evil.”

It was the level of exploitation of the young girls in the film that led to its ban in New Zealand, criticising the way the film relished in the spectacle of s**ual abuse and exploitation of the characters.

The movie’s director, Michael Goi, has even issued a warning in the wake of the movie’s revival.

“Do not watch the movie in the middle of the night. Do not watch the movie alone. And if you see the words ‘photo number one’ pop up on your screen, you have about four seconds to shut off the movie if you’re already kind of freaking out before you start seeing things that maybe you don’t want to see,” he said.
