Donald Trump’s mugshot has finally been released, and over on Twitter, now known as X, everyone is making the same joke.
The former US president has been booked on charges of election interference following his attempts to overturn Georgia’s election results in 2020.
The seventy-seven-year-old previously quit Twitter in favour of Truth Social, with whom he reportedly signed an eighteen-month deal that expired in June.
Truth Social is where Trump has kept his followers updated, particularly since May when he began to post regularly. Content shared by him includes criticism of his opponents and congressional and federal investigators as he tries to bolster support in the face of his charges.
The Guardian reported that Trump had 6.4 million followers on the app as of Thursday, which is dwarfed by his eighty-eight million followers on Twitter. Trump was banned from the app after the 6 January 2021 attack on Congress amid fears of more incitement of violence.
However, since Elon Musk’s takeover of the app in November last year, Trump’s ban was repealed. The self-titled “free speech absolutist” asked in a poll that garnered fifteen million votes whether Trump should be allowed back on the app. The poll ended with fifty-two-percent being in favour of his return.
Despite the repeal of his ban, Trump stayed silent on the app – until now. He has returned to share a photo of his mugshot, with a short message that read: “Election interference! Never surrender!”
He then linked to his website, where users are asked to make a donation to his campaign for the 2024 presidential election.
However, for many, the return of Trump with his mugshot is just another opportunity to crack some jokes. However, there is one comparison that is just too good to miss.
Much of Twitter has realised the similarity between the image of Trump and The Lorax, a character of Dr Seuss and 2012 movie fame.
“Why the mugshot look like somebody turned The Lorax upside down,” one person wrote.
A second called it a “The Lorax ass mugshot.”
