Smash Mouth Singer Steve Harwell Dead at 56

Steve Harwell, the lead singer of Smash Mouth, has tragically died aged 56.

This comes after it was reportedly that he had just days left to live.

According to a manager for the lead vocalist, Steve has battled alcoholism his whole life and was in the terminal stages of liver failure for which he had previously been undergoing treatment at a medical facility.

He was receiving hospice care at home, where friends and family have come together to say their goodbyes. At the time, Steve’s manager revealed he didn’t have long left. 

This comes two years after he announced his retirement following a shocking performance which saw him stumbling and slurring his words on stage.

Sources close to Steve at the time revealed he had been dealing with continuing health problems as a result of a variety of diagnoses he had gotten over the years, including Wernicke’s encephalopathy, cardiomyopathy, and heart failure. Back then, his substance misuse was also brought up, and was considered a factor in his deteriorating health.

Dozens of fans have shared their tributes to the star online after hearing the devastating news, one wrote: “Steve Harwell is a legend, and it’s crazy to think that he’s only 56 and he’s on his death bed. Alcohol abuse is a serious problem, and it’s sad to see someone like Steve fall victim to it.”

While a second commented: “Prayers for him and his family! So heartbreaking to hear. I choose to not think about the end but the life and music that is alive and will always be remembered. Thank you for sharing with us your amazing talent. Prayers for your health.”

“I’m legitimately heartbroken by the news regarding Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth. I knew his health wasn’t doing well for a while, but NOT like this. And while I do know S.M. for All Star & I’m A Believer, I’ve listened to quite a lot of their tracks afterward. Thank you, Steve,” a third said.

Another added: “Devastating news about Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth. Liver failure is a brutal battle, and our thoughts are with him and his loved ones during this difficult time. A somber moment to reflect on the impermanence of life and the importance of health.”
