A reboot of The Office is reportedly in the works, with the original US showrunner having signed on to the project.
After years of speculation, the classic sitcom is set to return to our screens, with more details reportedly being announced following the lifting of the writers’ strike.
Now, The Office is iconic. With its 188 episodes and all-star cast of comedy legends, it makes for the perfect binge watch.
The sitcom is one of the most popular shows of the new millennium. It first began airing in 2005 after the UK version, featuring Ricky Gervais and Martin Freeman, found huge success after it debuted in 2001.
In case you don’t know, the US version stars Steve Carrell in the leading role as boss Michael Scott, with John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and Rainn Wilson also featuring. Other notable cast members include Mindy Kaling, Ed Helms, B.J. Novak and Phyllis Smith.
It is one of the most successful comedy series of all time, with a rather impressive score of 9 out of 10 on IMDb, and eight-one percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
And now, it seems like fans of the show are in for a treat, as it is set to make a return to our screens, with Matthew Belloni of Puck News reporting that a reboot is set to be announced once the writers’ strike comes to an end.
Greg Daniels, who adapted the US series, is set to return to the show, but there is no word yet on casting.
Screen Rant reports that certain original cast members of the show have expressed keenness to return to Scranton in the past, including Mindy Kaling and John Krasinski.
However, BJ Novak who worked on the show both in front of the camera as Ryan and behind it as a writer, director and producer, has previously shared concerns about the potential for a reboot. He stressed that any comeback of the show must be motivated by an artistic decision rather than financial gain.
Fans have been responding to the news via social media, with many expressing concern that nothing could top the original.
“Regardless of if you’re a fan of The Office or not… the bar is kinda impossible to hit,” one person wrote.
A second put: “OMG DO NOT RUIN THE GREATEST SHOW EVER LEAVE IT ALONE DAMN.”
While a third said: “Man don’t ruin a great thing. Please leave it tf alone.”
However, not everyone is against the idea of a reboot.
“I don’t understand why everyone is against it so much I like the idea,” another fan said.
“As long as Steve Carrell is back, I’m all for it,” someone else wrote.
