A horrifying new series has landed on Netflix, and it has debuted with a rare Rotten Tomatoes score of ninety-five percent fresh.
Netflix has been under pressure to increase subscriber numbers after they have dwindled in recent years, but this latest offering is sure to keep viewers hooked on the streaming giant’s platform.
The new series comes from the mind of Mike Flanagan, who is known for creating seriously creepy hit shows, including The Haunting of Bly House and The Midnight Club.
Flanagan also created The Haunting of Hill House, so it’s no wonder that viewers are finding this new series to be reminiscent of that horror hit.
Flanagan’s latest show comes in the form of The Fall of the House of Usher. Starring Kate Siegel, Carla Gugino and even Mark Hamil of Star Wars fame, the show is based on a short story of the same name by the original king of macabre Edgar Allen Poe.
“To secure their fortune – and future – two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one,” the synopsis reads.
The series is set to hit screens right in time for spooky season, as it was released on October 12. However, reviewers have already submitted their thoughts on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s looking good so far.
The Tomatometer has rated it as ninety-five percent fresh, with a total of forty-one reviews so far.
A reporter for Vanity fair wrote: “By the end of House of Usher, we feel we have made our way through something dense and rich.
“This is not flimsy, forgettable TV. Flanagan’s ardent belief in the power of monologue and melodrama, of complex storytelling and florid style, is infectious.”
“Half creative writing project tied to a freshman seminar on Edgar Allan Poe, half horror-filled karmic catharsis, Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher is a bluntly entertaining exercise,” The Hollywood Reporter’s review read.
“Like Succession reinterpreted by the world’s foremost author of Poe fan fiction, Usher is a Gothic-tinged horror lark that’s more superficial than Flanagan’s previous work but still delivers some creepy chills,” Entertainment Weekly wrote in their review.
It’s not just critics who have been hyping up the new series either, as fans have been flocking to Twitter, now known as X, to share their excitement about the new series.
“This cast is going to absolutely take my breath away, I can just feel it in my bones,” one person wrote.
A second put: “OMG, I can’t wait! Mike Flanagan’s stuff is always super creepy and exciting. Definitely marking my calendar for October 12th!”
While a third said: “Mike Flanagan is my favourite horror creator right now. I’m so pumped for this.”
