Marks and Spencer has made a public apology after posting an outake from its Christmas advert onto social media, that showed party hats in the same colours as the Palestinian flag, burning in a fire.

The hats were red, green and silver and were shown burning in a fireplace. The post was captioned:

“This Christmas, do what you love… like saying no to paper hats”. The hashtag said #LoveThismasNotThatmas.

People took to social media to point out that the colours burned were very similar to the Palestinian flag and commented that the imagery was inappropriate and insensitive, after taking into account the current Israel-Palestine conflict.

The company has since shared that the ad outake was from August, months before Hamas launched an attack on Israel, on 7 October.

M&S has since released an apology on their Twitter account:
