Actor and 9/11 Hero Steve Buscemi Hospitalised After Random Attack In NYC

It appears that not even beloved hometown actor Steve Buscemi is safe on the streets of the Big Apple these days.

Last week, while strolling through Kips Bay, Buscemi, 66, fell victim to a broad-daylight attack, according to law enforcement sources cited by The Post. The assault is one of the latest in a series of unprovoked incidents across the five boroughs.

The actor suffered facial swelling and injuries to his left eye and was subsequently treated at Bellevue Hospital. Meanwhile, his attacker remains at large.

In a statement, Buscemi’s publicist addressed the incident, stating, “Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Mid-Town Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city.” The statement also expressed Buscemi’s gratitude for the well wishes received, alongside sadness for the prevalence of such attacks on New York streets.

The assault occurred around 11:48 a.m. on Wednesday in front of 369 Third Ave, as per police reports. Eyewitnesses described seeing Buscemi trip and fall backwards, prompting immediate concern among locals.

Nat, a nearby worker who witnessed part of the assault, shared her apprehensions: “It worries me for when we close because we close at 11 and it can get scary around that time.”

The NYPD released surveillance photos of the alleged attacker, described as a bearded man in a baseball cap, blue t-shirt, and black sweatpants.

Buscemi, known for his roles in acclaimed films like “Fargo” and “Reservoir Dogs,” gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson in the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”

This recent incident marks the second instance of violence against actors from the same series in New York City this year. Actor Michael Stuhbarg, who portrayed gangster Arnold Rothstein, was assaulted while jogging on the Upper East Side in March.

Despite Buscemi’s enduring popularity in his native city, exemplified by his response to the 9/11 attacks and community involvement, incidents like these underscore the challenges posed by urban safety.
