A Maine man who hit the jackpot with one of the largest lottery wins in American history is facing accusations of reneging on promises made to his family regarding their share of the winnings, including setting up a million-dollar trust fund and covering medical expenses for his father.

The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, purchased the winning ticket in Lebanon, Maine on Jan. 13 last year, securing the staggering $1.35 billion Mega Millions jackpot. Since then, he has been embroiled in a legal dispute with the mother of his daughter, stemming from allegations of violating a non-disclosure agreement regarding his newfound fortune.

In recent court filings, identified pseudonymously as Sara Smith, the mother claims that it was actually the lottery winner who disclosed the windfall to his family, contradicting his accusations against her.

Backing Smith’s assertions, the man’s father affirmed that his son personally divulged the news of his lottery triumph, outlining grand plans for the money, which he reportedly collected through an LLC in a lump sum exceeding $500 million.

“In February or March of 2023, my son came to my house… and informed me and my wife that he won a large amount of money in the Maine State Lottery,” his father wrote in court documents, refuting his son’s claims of limited disclosure.

Despite the son’s purported reluctance to share details about his wealth, he allegedly made numerous extravagant promises to his father, such as constructing a garage for car restoration, purchasing his childhood home, establishing a million-dollar trust fund, and covering future medical expenses for both his father and stepmother.

Tensions escalated further when the lottery winner insisted his father sever ties with Smith, his granddaughter’s mother, resulting in strained relations between father and son.

“I told him… ‘You are not the son I knew,’” the father stated in the filing, recounting the fallout from the demands.

In his own legal submissions, the lottery winner portrayed a different narrative, attributing the deterioration of his relationship with his father to his failure to sign a confidentiality agreement before disclosing his windfall.

Despite the conflicting accounts, the saga underscores the complexities that accompany sudden wealth, with familial relationships and financial obligations caught in the crossfire.
