Kate Beckinsale Responds To People Calling Her Too Thin: ‘I’m Just Trying To Survive’

Kate Beckinsale has fiercely defended herself against critics who commented on her weight following a recent health scare.

The actress addressed the issue after trolls flooded the comment section of an Instagram clip showing her preparing for her upcoming 1990s-based film, “Stolen Girl.”

The video featured Beckinsale, 50, sporting various retro outfits and hairstyles while having fun in her trailer. She described her on-set experience as a “redo” of the ’90s, reminiscing about the days she used to cut her own hair, wear her brother’s pajamas, live in Dr. Martens, and overuse translucent powder.

Despite her enthusiasm to return to work after weeks in the hospital, some followers were quick to criticize her appearance. One comment read, “Sorry to say this Kate, but you do look a bit thin. You always struck a great balance … But when your cheekbones start to show, the balance is lost.”

Beckinsale responded sharply, revealing the difficult year she had endured: “I nursed my [stepdad] to his death early this year. My mum also has stuff going on. I am adjusting to watching two fathers die, one when I was 5, one in January of this year.”

In January, Beckinsale lost her stepfather Roy Battersby after a brief illness. She had also discovered her father Richard Beckinsale’s body after he died of a heart attack when she was a child.

“I lost my soulmate cat of almost 19 years, also last year,” she added. “I spent six weeks in hospital due to copiously vomiting blood from a [Mallory-Weiss tear] caused by the stress of a whole year ripping a hole between my [esophagus] and stomach.”

Beckinsale further explained that she had “experienced a severe flare of [her] mast cell disease,” which is exacerbated by stress, shock, and grief.

She continued, “That’s what I am prepared to disclose that has contributed to some weight loss. What you think of my appearance and how I should look, independently of any circumstances in my life and my family’s, is not important.

“I am trying to survive what feel like unbearable losses, reactivated PTSD from discovering my very young father’s almost dead body as a very young child alone in the night, and working to support the family I have left.”

The “Van Helsing” star also criticized the troll for feeling the need “to bully females about their appearance.” She wrote, “The fact you fancy girls who are heavier than I am does not feature in things that are important or relevant. I don’t care what your taste in women is. I care that you think any of us need to be apprised of it … Do better.”

Beckinsale also responded to another commenter who wrote, “Please eat something. I love you, I’m very worried about your skinny look,” with a firm “Enough.”

In March, Beckinsale had alarmed fans by sharing a selfie from the hospital. For weeks, she posted cryptic photos from her hospital stay without revealing her illness. After being discharged, she hinted at her condition with a T-shirt reading, “Tummy Troubles Survivor.”
