Police Question Two People After 11-Year-Old Dies Doing ‘Chroming’ Trend

Police have questioned two individuals following the sudden and tragic death of 11-year-old Tommie-Lee Billington, who passed away after attempting a dangerous online challenge.

Tommie-Lee was found unresponsive at a friend’s house in Lancaster on March 2, and his family reported that he had attempted a challenge known as ‘chroming.’

Chroming, also referred to as huffing or sniffing, involves inhaling toxic chemicals such as solvents and aerosols. These substances can induce a high by slowing down brain function, leading to symptoms such as slurred speech, dizziness, hallucinations, and vomiting. In severe cases, chroming can result in seizures, suffocation, and significant damage to internal organs.

Tommie’s grandmother, Tina Burn, stated that the boy “died instantly” after attempting the online trend. “Tommie-Lee went into cardiac arrest immediately and died right there and then. The hospital did everything to try and bring him back but nothing worked. He was gone,” she said. “He had a heart of gold, just like his dad. Our family is utterly devastated.”

Following the incident, Lancashire Police questioned two individuals from Lancaster. A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of child cruelty, neglect, possession with intent to supply a drug, and money laundering. He was released on bail pending further inquiries. A 35-year-old woman was voluntarily interviewed regarding allegations of possession with intent to supply.

Police were alerted by the ambulance service to the sudden death report. Upon arrival at the address, they found the boy unresponsive. “We were called by the ambulance service at 12:04 pm on Saturday, March 2, to an address on Greenset Close, Lancaster, to a report of a sudden death,” said the police. “Emergency services attended an address and found an 11-year-old boy unresponsive. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead. The death is currently being treated as unexplained and the coroner has been informed.”

They added, “A police investigation is ongoing and the boy’s family are being supported by officers. Our thoughts are with the boy’s loved ones at this incredibly sad time. If anyone has any information, they are asked to contact police.”

Tommie’s family described him as ‘bright’ and ‘energetic,’ stating that he was ‘the life and soul of any room.’ His grandmother has called on social media companies to “do more” to protect young users from dangerous trends.
