Fake Keanu Reeves Cons Woman Abroad Out Of More Than $700,000

A Spanish superfan of Keanu Reeves recently found herself swindled out of nearly $750,000 in a sophisticated financial scam. The woman, known as Chloe, appeared on the Spanish TV show Y ahora Sonsoles to recount her experience. Chloe initially believed she was corresponding with the Canadian actor, famous for his roles in The Matrix and John Wick, after he replied to one of her social media comments.

The scammer, posing as Reeves, engaged Chloe in daily conversations, discussing topics like rock music and motorcycles. He even sent audio messages in English to further the illusion. Over time, the fake Reeves began asking Chloe for money, citing various reasons such as needing €60,000 for a private jet, €5,000 for a special computer for scriptwriting, and investments in Bitcoin.

Chloe ended up transferring a total of €700,000 ($750,000) to the scammer, even pawning her possessions and borrowing money from relatives to fulfill his requests. After completing 16 bank transfers, Chloe eventually grew suspicious and realized she was likely being duped, prompting her to sever ties with the fraudster.

This case is part of a broader pattern of scams involving impersonations of Keanu Reeves. Earlier this year, a 65-year-old woman from Colorado believed she had been conversing with the actor since 2022. She reported giving him access to her bank accounts and tax information and had sent him around $5,000. Despite warnings and widespread media reports, she remained convinced of her authenticity, stating she would only believe it was a scam if Reeves personally denied it.

These scams have persisted for years, with representatives for Keanu Reeves repeatedly clarifying that he does not have a Facebook account or any other social media presence. The cases highlight the importance of vigilance and skepticism when engaging with individuals online, especially those claiming to be celebrities.
