Ella Emhoff recently addressed rumors suggesting she had been hospitalized for a “mental breakdown” following her stepmother Kamala Harris’s loss to Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
On Saturday, Ella took to her Instagram Story to clarify the situation, stating, “OK, I’m just gonna go out and say it. There’s a rumor about me having a mental breakdown and getting checked into a hospital. Not true.” She added, “Also f–k you if you’re out there spreading that,” emphasizing that showing emotion or crying should not be stigmatized. “Anyone who says there is probably needs a good cry,” she remarked.

Ella, 25, who has been open about facing “mental health” challenges throughout her life, said she feels no shame in expressing those experiences. Her mother, Kerstin Emhoff, also defended her daughter on social media, dismissing the rumors as “MAGA bs” in a post on X. “Leave my kids alone!!! Ella is doing great and spending a lovely day with her mom!” she wrote, emphasizing the importance of emotional expression and resilience. “It’s ok to not feel great right now. We aren’t letting anyone break our family down.”

Speculation about Ella’s well-being began after she was seen crying at Harris’s concession speech at Howard University on Wednesday.
The day after, she shared a candid post on Instagram about her stepmom’s loss, writing, “Truly no words. We are all gonna get through this. It just f–king hurts like a b*tch right now and that’s OK,” according to Fox News. She encouraged her followers to “check in on each other” and continue working to make a difference in their communities. “The fight doesn’t stop now,” she wrote.
A vocal supporter of Harris’s 2024 campaign, Ella had appeared at the Democratic National Convention earlier in the year. Her mother, Kerstin, was married to Douglas Emhoff, the current second gentleman, from 1992 to 2008. Emhoff later married Harris in 2014, and he and Kerstin also share a son, Cole Emhoff.
