Disney has decided to cut a transgender storyline from an upcoming Pixar series.

The Pixar series, produced under Disney’s banner, chronicles the journey of a co-ed middle school softball team, the Pickles, as they gear up for their championship match.

Set to debut on Disney+ on February 19, the series consists of eight episodes, each spotlighting a different team member.

While the character initially tied to a storyline about gender identity remains part of the show, the narrative surrounding this topic has been removed, according to a source familiar with the project.

This alteration reportedly occurred months ago, despite the character’s dialogue already being recorded.

The decision has stirred speculation regarding Disney’s intentions, particularly given the recent reelection of former President Donald Trump. Known for opposing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, Trump’s political resurgence has coincided with corporate reassessments of DEI initiatives.

When asked whether the storyline’s removal signaled Disney’s attempt to distance itself from diversity efforts, the company declined to comment, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Disney CEO Bob Iger, however, has previously emphasized that the company prioritizes entertainment over delivering social messages.

In an interview with CNBC earlier this year, Iger remarked, “The term ‘woke’ is thrown around rather liberally. I think a lot of people don’t even understand really what it means. The bottom line is that infusing messaging as a sort of number one priority in our films and TV shows is not what we’re up to. They need to be entertaining.”

Public reactions to the decision have been mixed. Some applauded Disney’s move, arguing that such topics are best addressed by parents. “As a parent, I’m grateful Disney is respecting our role in guiding our kids,” shared one social media user.

Others criticized the removal, calling it a response to political pressure. “Disney is caving to a loud minority and abandoning the very inclusivity it claims to champion,” one commenter argued. Critics also expressed dismay, suggesting the decision marks a retreat in representation.

“This sends a message that trans stories aren’t worth telling, even in a nuanced way,” said one disappointed viewer. Some also highlighted the impact on the creative team. “Imagine the artists and writers who poured their hearts into that storyline only to see it erased,” lamented a Pixar enthusiast.
