A lip reader has revealed what a Virginia high school runner said to her opponent before hitting her in the head with the baton.

Alaila Everett was running the second leg for I.C. Norcom High School in the girl’s 4×200 meter relay when she allegedly hit Brookville High School junior Kaelen Tucker across the head with the baton, during the VHSL Class 3 State Indoor Championships at Liberty University last week.

With a video of the incident going viral, people are speculating what could have caused it, with one lip reader thinking they have figured it all out.

According to Nicola Hickling, founder of LipReader, she said “Get off” and “hey oh” as she hit Tucker.

At the time of the incident, both runners had been competing for second place.

Speaking to WSLS, Tucker explained “When we got to the curve she kept bumping me in my arm and when we got off the curve I finally passed her and that was when she hit me with the baton,”.

After Tucker was in second place, she was hit by the baton, then Everett grabbed her opponents head and diverted her off the track as she fell.

Her arm made a second hitting motion towards Tucker, then she dropped her baton and ran past, pointing at Tucker.

After medical examiners looked at Tucker’s injury, they diagnosed her with a concussion and a “possible skull fracture”.

Speaking in an interview after the fact, Everett explained “I know my intentions and I would never hit someone on purpose,”.

Tucker revealed after that Everett did not apologize or check on her injuries. Her parents said: “They were beside us at the event. They were watching the video at the event, but no one apologized or came to check on her,”, “Even if it was a fluke or freak accident, you still would check on her.”
