King Charles has given queen Camilla a new royal title in an unexpected move.

The head of state gave his wife a new title ahead of her 78th birthday, according to the Royal Navy.

Camilla now goes by the Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom as of July 16.

She is the first woman to be given this title, which can only be given by the sovereign after nomination of the First Sea Lord, Sir Gwyn Jenkins.

Jenkins shared a statement on 16 July, explaining her new title will “further enhance Her Majesty’s relationship with the Service.”

The statement read: “We are honored to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to HM Naval Base Devonport,”, “Her Majesty’s visit has been a tremendous boost to morale, and the honorary appointment reflects the high regard in which Her Majesty is held by all of us.”

When King Charles ascended the throne in September 2022, he gifted his wife the title of “Queen Consort”, the countries first in more than 80 years – after Queen Elizabeth’s wishes.

However, just before coronation day, Charles made a last minute change for her title to be “Queen Camilla”.

The monarch previously opened up about the secret to their happy 20-year marriage.

Speaking to reporters in April, she shared:  “We are always going in different directions, like ships that pass in the night. We whizz past each other.” Adding that they always set aside time for “a bit of a catch-up”.  “I suppose it’s just sort of friendship, really,” Camilla added. “Laughing at the same things, getting on with life.”
