The disappearance of a University of Alabama student in Barcelona has prompted an international search effort, emotional appeals from friends and family, and growing concern over the circumstances in which he was last seen during a spring break trip to Spain. James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old junior from Elmhurst, Illinois, was reported missing after a night out in the Catalan city, where he had travelled to visit friends studying abroad. Catalonia police said they had opened an investigation after receiving a report of a possible disappearance, with authorities stating that Gracey was reported last seen at about 3am on 17 March in the Port Olímpic area.

According to statements from his family and friends, Gracey had been at Shôko, a beachfront nightclub in Barcelona, during the early hours of Tuesday morning. He did not make it back to the Airbnb where he was staying, prompting alarm among those travelling with him and later among relatives in the United States. Family statements reported by NBC Chicago said he had travelled to Barcelona after spending time in Amsterdam over the weekend, arriving in the Spanish city on Monday morning. He was described as about 6ft 1in tall, weighing around 175 pounds, and last seen wearing a white shirt, dark trousers or joggers, and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross.

Friends say the night took a troubling turn when Gracey became separated from the rest of his group. Cavin McLay, a close friend and fellow member of the Theta Chi fraternity at the University of Alabama, said Gracey was parted from the others later in the evening and that no one had heard from him since. McLay, who was also in Barcelona during the trip, described the search as deeply distressing and said the group was trying to remain hopeful while fearing the worst. He told local television outlets in Alabama that Gracey was one of his best friends and that what had begun as an ordinary spring break trip had become an urgent effort to find him.

The case has taken on additional urgency because of what investigators and relatives say happened after Gracey vanished. Reports cited by family members and regional media indicate that surveillance footage showed him leaving the club area with another person at around 3am, though police have not publicly released that footage. Catalonia police have confirmed only that an open investigation is under way. Several reports, including those citing the family and local journalists, said Gracey’s mobile phone has been recovered, although it remains unclear exactly where it was found or how it came into police possession. That unanswered question has become one of the central mysteries in the case, intensifying concern among relatives who have publicly said Gracey’s disappearance is entirely out of character.

His mother, Therese Gracey, made a public plea for help in a Facebook post that was later verified by NBC Chicago. In that message, she said her son was in Barcelona visiting friends studying abroad and wrote that police had his phone even though he had not returned to the Airbnb. The family has since urged anyone with information to contact them directly, circulating his description and photographs as the search widened. People magazine reported that loved ones described his disappearance as “completely out of character,” stressing that he was responsible, close to his family and friends, and not someone who would voluntarily disappear without making contact.

As the search has expanded, Gracey’s parents and friends have travelled to Spain to assist. McLay said Gracey’s father had landed in Barcelona and that the family and friends were working with local authorities, the US embassy, the State Department and the office of Senator Katie Britt. Reports from Alabama broadcasters said the group had also been handing out flyers in the area in the hope that someone might recognise him or provide information about his movements after he was last seen. The involvement of multiple agencies has underscored both the seriousness of the disappearance and the challenges of handling a fast-moving case across jurisdictions and languages.

The University of Alabama has said it is supporting the family while Gracey remains missing. NBC Chicago reported that a university spokesperson confirmed he had been travelling on a personal trip and that staff were assisting relatives as information was gathered. Gracey was not an anonymous student on campus. Friends have described him as a visible and engaged member of the university community, and his public LinkedIn profile identifies him as a chaplain in Theta Chi’s Alpha Phi chapter while also expressing ambitions to build a career in public accounting.

That image of Gracey as a steady, trusted figure has been reinforced by those who know him best. McLay said Gracey was “a man of upstanding character” and “one of those people that’s there for anyone when they ever need it.” He said Gracey had served as chaplain of the fraternity’s executive board, mentoring younger members and helping guide his fraternity brothers in their faith. McLay also said Gracey was involved as one of the fraternity’s philanthropy chairmen, devoting time to charitable work and to supporting others. Those descriptions have formed a consistent picture across interviews and family statements of a student who was academically focused, socially involved and not prone to sudden silence or reckless disappearance.

Reports in the United States have also filled in more of Gracey’s background. NBC Chicago said he graduated from Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago before attending the University of Alabama. People and other outlets identified him as an accounting student and noted that he had been visiting friends already based in Barcelona for study abroad. His trip, by all available accounts, was supposed to be a short spring break visit, with family members expecting him back in the United States within days. That ordinary student travel itinerary has made the case all the more disturbing for those following it, because it began not with a long unexplained absence but with a single night out that appears to have ended abruptly and without explanation.

For now, key questions remain unanswered. Police have not publicly detailed what, if anything, the surveillance footage shows beyond Gracey’s last known movements, nor have they explained the significance of the recovered phone. There has been no public indication of an arrest, no formal announcement of foul play by authorities, and no confirmation of what happened after Gracey was last seen in the Port Olímpic area. But the available facts have been enough to keep friends, relatives and supporters focused on one immediate goal: finding him. As flyers circulate, family appeals continue and investigators pursue leads in Barcelona, the case remains an open and increasingly urgent search for a missing American student whose disappearance has shaken those who knew him.
