When it comes to watching TV, there are just some shows which stand out above all the rest. Truly prestigious television is a work of art, and easily compares with the greatest films and plays out there. But in a recent poll, it was revealed that the majority of the best television shows appear to be behind us.
IMDB has encouraged users to rate the best television shows they’ve ever seen, and created a top twenty list. But there’s only one show on the list which is still airing today – and it may surprise you. So let’s take a look at the list …
In first place with an IMDb rating of 9.5/10 is David Attenborough’s 6-part wildlife documentary series Planet Earth II. Second place, with the same rating, goes to Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad.
With 9.4/10, next comes the original Planet Earth series and Emmy-winning WWII series Band of Brothers.
In fifth, and sixth place are Chernobyl and The Wire, both of which scored 9.3/10.
And the next 6 shows on the list all have a score of 9.2. There are two more Attenborough addition on the list here: David Attenborough’s under the sea documentary Blue Planet II, and the Netflix nature series Our Planet.
Documentaries are clearly popular, as this slot of the list is also occupried by space documentaries Cosmos (1980) and the remake Cosmos (2014).
Then, of course comes cult classic, The Sopranos, and animated show Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Number thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen place on the list all share a score of 9.1/10. These positions are occupied by epic fantasy Game of Thrones, anime show Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, World War 2 doc The World At War, and existential cartoon Rick & Morty.
And the final 4 spaces in the top twenty have a score of 9/10. These coveted spots go to the Netflix sports documentary The Last Dance, BBC mystery drama Sherlock, cult classic horror seriesThe Twilight Zone, and the final entry for David Attenborough on the list, nature documentary Life.
So which entry in the IMDB top twenty is still running today? Why, it’s Rick and Morty, of course!
Rick and Morty first aired in 2013, and was created by Dan Harmon. It stars Justin Roiland as both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith.
The show has broken records for being the most watched show in Adult Swim history, and has even won 2 Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program, so it shouldn’t really be surprising that it’s on the list. There have so far been 6 seasons, with one more due out later this year!
