Whenever I’m asked, I’m always genuinely torn – to the point of stress and pain – whether Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or Blade Runner 2049 is the best film ever. Or at least my favourite film of all time.

The thing that makes it so hard to choose is that objectively, they’re polar opposites on the metaphorical film scale. With that said, if I were asked what I’d want a sequel/prequel to, I suppose I’d choose Blade Runner.

Although both are completely contained stories, I suppose there’s more to add to the two, already-existing Blade Runner films.

And that’s exactly what’s happening, since Adult Swim (of Rick and Morty fame) have announced that they’re going to be creating a Blade Runner: Black Lotus anime series, set in the year 2033.

It will come courtesy of directors Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama. Meanwhile, Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo) has been tapped as creative producer.

Adult Swim SVP/Creative Director Jason DeMarco said in the press release:

I first saw Blade Runner in 1982, at age 11. It has remained one of the defining films of my life.

To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.

In a press release, it was announced that Blade Runner: Black Lotus “will take place in 2032 and will include some familiar characters from the Blade Runner universe.”

I can’t wait.
