In case you weren’t aware, it was the biggest night in television last night!

That’s right, anyone who’s anyone descended on the National Television Awards last night to celebrate all that they’ve done this past year, in what’s definitely not just another sycophantic, self-indulgent award ceremony.

Anyway, most of the talk on the night was of Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly’s win as Best Presenters’ for the 18th year in a row.

However, not everyone was as happy as the duo, with many viewers furious that he won the award after a lengthy hiatus from TV screens following his battle with drink and drug addiction and subsequent drink-drive arrest in March.

Many people took to Twitter  to hit out at his win due to the fact he had taken a break:

However, there were many supporters of Ant too, with one handle in particular ‘shutting down’ his critics:

As the pair scooped up the prestigious gong, the cameras swooped over to the presenters in front of a huge live audience at the Britain’s Got Talent auditions.

Ant was overcome by emotion as the award was announced, telling viewers that he didn’t feel he could accept the NTA this time.

He said:

“Oh wow, oh wow. Thank you, thank you very much. This is a genuine shock, especially this year. I’m shaking here. I want to say thank you to everybody,” said Ant, making reference to his charge and recent stint in rehab.

He continued: “I really don’t feel like I can accept this award this year – it has to go to this guy [pointing to Dec] for his hard work, dedication, wit and funniness and for being the best mate out there – I love you, man.”

Dec also thanked everyone who had voted for them, adding: “Thank you to everybody for their kind and thoughtful messages, they’ve kept us going over the last year – this year probably more than ever.”
