The producer of Aquaman 2 has shut down fans of Johnny Depp who want his ex-wife Amber Heard fired from her role in the superhero movie.

The actress is currently filming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – the sequel to the 2018 film starring Jason Momoa.

Speaking on Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, the film’s producer Peter Safran said that he and his team would never bow to pressure from fans on social media.

He said: “I don’t think we’re ever going to react to, honestly, pure fan pressure.

“You gotta do what’s best for the movie.

“We felt that if it’s James Wan and Jason Momoa, it should be Amber Heard. That’s really what it was.”

He added: “One is not unaware of what is going on in the Twitter-verse, but that doesn’t mean you have to react to it or take it as gospel or accede to their wishes.

“You have to do what’s right for the film, and that’s really where we landed on it.”

Fans started a Change.Org petition titled “Remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2” after Johnny Depp was fired from his role as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

The petition has now been signed almost 2 million times.

Depp was removed from his role after he failed to win a libel case against The Sun newspaper for calling him a “wife-beater.”

The publication branded Depp a “wife-beater” following accusations made against him by Heard that he was abusive towards her throughout their marriage.

The judge ultimately sided with the publication and agreed that the portrayal was “substantially true”.

This resulted in Warner Bros. asking him to step down from his role in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3.

The organizers of the campaign maintain that Heard should have received a similar fate to Depp as Warner Bros. is in control of both the Harry Potter and DC franchises.

The calls are largely based on the various allegations that have been thrown her way over the years, including her ex-husband’s allegations against her.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in November last year, Heard confirmed that she would be staying on the film franchise despite attempts to have her dropped.

She said: “I’m super excited about the amount of fan love and the amount of fan appreciation that Aquaman has acquired and that it has garnered so much excitement for Aquaman and Mera that it means we’ll be coming back.

“I’m so excited to film that.”

She added: “Paid rumours and paid campaigns on social media don’t dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality.

“Only the fans actually made Aquaman and Aquaman 2 happen. I’m excited to get started next year.”

In a 2018 opinion piece for the Washington Post, Heard revealed that she had lost work after speaking out.

She said: “Friends and advisers told me I would never again work as an actress — that I would be blacklisted.

“A movie I was attached to recast my role. I had just shot a two-year campaign as the face of a global fashion brand, and the company dropped me.”

Depp is currently suing Heard over the Washington Post opinion piece – saying that the article implied he was violent towards her.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see the return of Jason Momoa as the film’s lead, Patrick Wilson as Orm and Yahya Abdul-Mateen as Black Manta.

Game of Thrones star Pilou Asbaek has been cast in an unknown role, and James Wan will once again direct.

The film is slated for release on December 16, 2022.
