The Daft Punk GTA 6 soundtrack claim sounds designed for maximum internet excitement: Rockstar Games allegedly offered the retired French duo an “essentially unlimited budget” for one final reunion. There is just one inconvenient detail. Nobody involved has confirmed it.
The allegation came from music industry account Has It Leaked on October 19. According to its post, Daft Punk’s management received a proposal for a “final comeback,” with Justice becoming Rockstar’s second choice after the supposed approach failed.
Rockstar Games, Daft Punk, Justice and Daft Punk’s representatives have not publicly confirmed or denied the account. Dexerto, Instant Gaming, Gameranx and GTA BOOM subsequently covered the story, but none reported independent sourcing. GTA BOOM described it as an unverified, single-source rumour, while Instant Gaming also urged caution.
In short, the claim remains possible, expensive-sounding and unsupported beyond one post. An impressive budget is not the same thing as evidence, despite the internet’s occasional efforts to merge those concepts.
What Rockstar has actually confirmed
Rockstar has announced that French electronic duo Justice composed the original score for Grand Theft Auto VI. The first track, “Flower in a Hurricane,” debuted on October 15 and features Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.
That confirmed commission is narrower than the wider music package planned for the game. Rockstar has separated the music into several components:
- Justice’s instrumental score
- Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, containing 34 original songs
- The game’s collection of radio stations and podcasts, described by Rockstar as its broadest yet
This distinction creates a problem for the rumour. Has It Leaked referred generally to the “soundtrack,” without establishing whether Rockstar allegedly wanted Daft Punk to compose the score, contribute to the 34-track album, or handle both. Those are very different jobs, particularly when one requires reuniting an act that formally ended in 2021.
A Daft Punk connection may still exist without a reunion. GTA BOOM reported that Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo has a production credit on Travis Scott’s album track “RHYNO.” Individual work by one former member, however, is not the same as reviving Daft Punk.
Why a reunion would have been difficult
Daft Punk members Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo announced their split in February 2021 after nearly three decades together. The duo had become one of electronic music’s most influential acts through records including “One More Time,” “Digital Love” and “Get Lucky.”
Bangalter later suggested the separation involved more than finding the correct number on a contract. Discussing the group’s retirement and its relationship with technology in 2023, he said: “The last thing I would want to be… is a robot.”
The musicians already have links to gaming. Daft Punk appeared as playable characters in DJ Hero, while several of their songs feature in Beat Saber. “Music Sounds Better With You” by Stardust, a project featuring Bangalter, also appeared in Grand Theft Auto V.
Justice is connected to that history, although Pedro Winter would prefer people not to treat the two acts as replacement parts. His label, Ed Banger Records, represents Justice, and Winter previously managed Daft Punk. He has said plainly: “I don’t like to compare Daft Punk and Justice.”
Justice remains best known for tracks including “D.A.N.C.E.” and “Genesis,” and its confirmed involvement gives Rockstar a major French electronic act regardless of whether the alleged first approach ever happened.
The game is already selling without the reunion
Take-Two Interactive says Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Analytics firm Sensor Tower estimated that the game had received 6.08 million digital console preorders by October 13, representing about $594 million in revenue. Its model assigned 74% of those orders to PlayStation 5 and 26% to Xbox Series X/S.
Those figures are estimates based on digital storefront data, not sales totals confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. Sensor Tower also calculated that preorders were 148% ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, which generated $800 million during its opening weekend in 2022.
So Rockstar hardly needs a Daft Punk reunion to make the launch conspicuous. For now, Justice’s score is official. The supposed unlimited offer is not.
