Jack Nicholson’s retirement appears to involve staying close to home, avoiding film sets and walking around in slippers. According to longtime friend Michael Douglas, the 89-year-old actor is well, even if he has largely vanished from public life.
Nicholson has not appeared in a film since the 2010 romantic comedy How Do You Know, which also starred Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd. Sixteen years later, there is little evidence that another role is coming.
What Michael Douglas said about Nicholson
Speaking at an event promoting his memoir One Helluva Ride, Douglas said he still sees Nicholson but does not expect them to work together.
“I would have liked to have acted with Jack,” Douglas said. “He’s not working anymore. He’s well. He has disappeared. I know that.”
Douglas then offered a less dramatic picture than the word “disappeared” might suggest.
“I still see him, but he is fine. He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers,” he said. “It happens. He deserves it. I understand. He is a few years older than me, but I understand.”
The two actors never shared the screen. Their careers came closest on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which Douglas produced. Nicholson won his first Academy Award for his performance in the 1975 film, later adding two more Oscars to a career that hardly requires further decoration.
Has Jack Nicholson officially retired?
Nicholson has not made a grand retirement announcement, but his comments and long absence from acting have made his position fairly clear.
In 2013, when he was 76, Nicholson said he no longer felt the same need to remain visible. He also explained that he would only consider films that genuinely affected audiences.
“The movie business is the greatest business, but I only want to do films that move people, films about emotions and people,” he said.
A possible comeback emerged when Nicholson became attached to an American remake of the 2016 German comedy Toni Erdmann, with Kristen Wiig set to co-star. He withdrew in August 2018, and the project subsequently fell apart.
His most recent major televised appearance came during the 50th anniversary celebration of Saturday Night Live in 2025. Nicholson briefly appeared to introduce Adam Sandler, proving that he has not entirely abandoned public view. He is simply keeping appearances rare, which Hollywood sometimes treats as a missing-person case.
Douglas’s account suggests there is no health crisis or secret project waiting to be announced. Nicholson is living privately, remains in contact with friends and appears content to leave his acting career where it stands.
