The Jen Affleck divorce became public just as the pregnant reality star was celebrating a family milestone. One day after filing to end her marriage to Zac Affleck, Jen posted a birthday message for their eldest daughter, Nora, who turned 5.
On November 4, the 27-year-old shared an Instagram Story showing Nora posing with a bicycle in a pink Disney princess outfit. Balloons filled the room, including a large display reading “Happy Birthday.”
“I can't believe she's already 5,” Jen wrote.
The cheerful post arrived during a rather less cheerful week. Utah court records obtained by E! News show that Jen filed for divorce on November 3 after seven years of marriage.
What the private divorce filing reveals
TMZ independently confirmed the November 3 filing and reported that Jen submitted a proposed parenting plan. Because the case is private, publicly available records do not disclose why she is seeking a divorce or what custody arrangement she requested.
No reliable report reviewed showed that Zac, 30, had responded to the filing. Neither he nor Jen had publicly addressed it, leaving the legal paperwork to do the announcing, as legal paperwork so often does.
The couple met in 2018 through Mutual, a dating app for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They married on June 28, 2019, six months after becoming engaged.
Jen and Zac have three children:
- Nora, 5
- Luca, 3
- Penelope, 16 months
They announced in June that they were expecting a fourth child. The pregnancy and the ages of their children make the undisclosed parenting proposal one of the most consequential parts of the case, even if viewers and court-watchers cannot currently see its terms.
How the split could shape the Orange County spinoff
The timing also creates an unusually direct collision between private upheaval and reality television scheduling. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Orange County, which follows Jen after the family’s move to Southern California, is scheduled to premiere on Hulu on November 12.
Production sources told TMZ that Zac did not film any scenes for the first season. Any discussion of the marriage on the spinoff will therefore come from Jen’s perspective, rather than through scenes featuring both spouses.
That distinction matters because their relationship had already become a major storyline on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The original series documented arguments between the couple, including Zac threatening divorce after Jen attended a Chippendales outing during a trip to Las Vegas.
The Atlantic reported that Jen had given Zac $2,500 to gamble during that trip while she was supporting the family and his plans for medical school. The disputes prompted sustained public scrutiny of their finances and marriage well before a court filing confirmed the split.
The new series may provide context for the months leading up to the divorce, but Zac’s absence means it cannot offer an on-camera account from both sides. Reality television can record plenty, but apparently not compulsory participation.
Jen previously described a difficult pregnancy
In August, Jen told People that the previous months had been challenging, although she sounded hopeful about what came next.
“It’s been a lot the past couple of months, I’ll be honest,” she said. “But I do feel like I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and just trying to count my blessings every single day.”
She also discussed experiencing prenatal depression during her first trimester. Jen said the condition left her unable to care for the children as she normally would, requiring Zac to take on more responsibility at home.
“I could not be there for my kids, and so Zac really had to show up,” she said. “I mean, he didn’t really have a choice.”
Despite the strain elsewhere in their relationship, she credited him with supporting the family during that period. “I wouldn’t have survived the first trimester without him,” Jen added.
Those comments now sit alongside the divorce filing, but they do not establish what caused the marriage to end. With the case sealed from wider public view and neither spouse offering a statement, the reason remains private.
For now, Jen’s public attention is staying on her children. Nora’s birthday post offered no comment about the separation, custody or the coming television premiere. It was simply a mother marking her daughter turning 5, while several much larger changes waited just outside the frame.
