A Justin Timberlake docuseries could revisit his history with Janet Jackson and Britney Spears, according to a report citing three unnamed sources. The proposed four-part Apple TV project is certainly capable of generating headlines. Its existence, however, has not yet been confirmed by Apple or any of the people supposedly involved.
Variety reported that Fisher Stevens, who directed Netflix’s 2023 series about David Beckham, is directing the project. One source said Jackson appears and discusses the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, while another said Timberlake responds to “some” recent comments made by Spears.
The series is reportedly being considered for a December release, although there is no exact premiere date. There is also no official title, trailer or confirmed production announcement. Timberlake, Jackson, Spears, Stevens and Apple had not publicly commented as of November 3.
Other reports from Rolling Stone, Us Weekly, TMZ and Complex all traced the claims back to Variety rather than offering separate confirmation. For now, then, this is one report travelling through several publications and acquiring an increasingly confident tone along the way.
What could Janet Jackson say about the Super Bowl?
Jackson’s reported involvement would be the most significant element because she has already spoken publicly about the incident and said she considers the matter settled.
During the halftime show at Reliant Stadium in Houston on February 1, 2004, Timberlake joined Jackson for “Rock Your Body”. At the end of the performance, he pulled away part of her costume and exposed her right breast on live television.
The Federal Communications Commission recorded an average audience of 89.8 million. It later fined 20 CBS-owned stations the maximum available penalty at the time, $27,500 each, for a total of $550,000. A federal appeals court eventually invalidated the fine, and the US Supreme Court declined to revive it in 2012.
Jackson absorbed much of the professional and public backlash, while Timberlake’s solo career continued to grow. That unequal treatment has remained central to later reassessments of the event.
In her authorised 2022 documentary, Jackson said she had advised Timberlake not to make a public statement because his career was at risk. She added that they remained friends and had “moved on”.
Variety did not specifically report that Jackson had given a formal interview for the new series. It said she appears and discusses the Super Bowl, a narrower claim than some later coverage suggested. If confirmed, her contribution could offer new detail, or simply repeat the position she made clear four years earlier.
How could Britney Spears feature?
The report says Timberlake addresses some of Spears’ recent comments, but it does not identify which ones.
Her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, included several claims about their relationship, which lasted from 1999 until 2002. Spears wrote that she became pregnant by Timberlake and had an abortion after he said they were not ready to become parents. She also said she believed he used their breakup as material for his 2002 debut solo album, Justified.
Timberlake had already apologised publicly to both Spears and Jackson in 2021. He said he cared for and respected them, adding: “I know I failed.” Whether the reported series expands on that apology or presents a different account remains unknown.
That uncertainty matters because the project is described as a Timberlake-centred look at his career. Without confirmation of who else participated, it is too early to know whether it will examine disputed events from several perspectives or mainly provide its subject with four episodes to explain himself.
What else has happened in Timberlake’s career?
The 45-year-old singer has faced several difficult years beyond the controversies involving Jackson and Spears.
In 2024, police arrested him after officers said he drove through a stop sign and moved onto the wrong side of the road. He was initially charged with driving while intoxicated and later pleaded guilty to a lesser offence.
Timberlake disclosed in 2025 that he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease after criticism of some tour performances, including claims that he was doing the “bare minimum” on stage. In an Instagram statement, he described the illness as “relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically”.
He said the diagnosis helped explain periods of severe nerve pain, fatigue and sickness while performing. Timberlake considered ending the tour but decided to continue, saying the enjoyment of performing outweighed the physical strain.
It is not clear whether the reported series will cover his health, touring criticism or arrest. Despite descriptions of a broad examination of his career’s highs and lows, the only specific subjects attributed to sources are Jackson, the Super Bowl and comments by Spears.
Until Apple or one of the named participants confirms the project, its scope and release plans remain provisional. A December premiere is possible. So is the traditional television-industry alternative: silence, followed by an announcement everyone pretends was never in doubt.
