Kristen Bell has explained Dax Shepard’s flirting, and it apparently involves him complimenting other people while she watches. Romance, as ever, has chosen a complicated administrative process.
During the October 26 episode of Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Bell told her Nobody Wants This castmates that she can tell when her husband is trying to impress her in public.
“If we go to a dinner or something, there’s a couple things Dax does where he doesn’t have to look up and wink at me, but I know that he’s just being the best boy,” she said.
One example is Shepard praising a restaurant worker’s appearance, with Bell recalling that he might say: “Wow, you have incredible eyelashes, gorgeous eyes, great job.”
When podcast co-host Monica Padman suggested Shepard was actually flirting with the waiter or waitress, Bell rejected that interpretation. She said the compliment is directed at her because Shepard has made someone else feel good.
“Let’s say it is a girl; he’s gonna have zero interaction with this girl for the rest of his life,” Bell explained. “The chances of him ever having another conversation with her are so microscopic.”
For Bell, Shepard smiling at strangers and offering kind words is a reflection of the qualities she values in him. “That’s how I know you’re flirting with me a lot,” she said.
The couple, who have been married for 13 years, have previously shared similarly unconventional glimpses of their relationship. For their 12th wedding anniversary in October 2025, Bell posted a tribute recalling Shepard’s response after an episode of Dateline: “I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.”
Bell offered a less alarming explanation of their bond that same month on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. She said they understand each other’s “highs and lows and excitements and complaints,” adding that their shared creativity allows them to become absorbed in unexpected conversations and feel as though they are making something together.
