Patrick Stewart’s family regrets included a painfully distant relationship with his two children, Daniel Stewart and Sophie Alexandra Stewart. Yet his own accounts also suggest the situation was more complicated than a clean break, with signs of reconciliation, close bonds with his grandchildren and differing descriptions of where the family stood.
The actor, who died on October 28 aged 86, spoke bluntly about his failings as a father. In a 2023 interview with the Irish Independent, he described his relationships with Daniel and Sophie as “practically non-existent.”
“I always put my acting work first, before my family,” Stewart said.
He described feeling “significant grief” over the distance and said memories of his children caused him pain every day. The admission left little room for the usual celebrity scheduling excuses. Stewart believed his ambition had come at a lasting personal cost.
Was Patrick Stewart completely estranged from his children?
Other accounts presented a less definitive picture. While promoting his 2023 memoir, Making It So, Stewart described the relationship as “a work in progress,” according to Associated Press coverage.
The memoir also indicated that he remained on good terms with Daniel, who became an actor and appeared alongside his father. Stewart wrote about maintaining strong relationships with his four grandchildren, and said he displayed their artwork in production offices while working.
He had previously expressed hope that being present for his grandchildren could help him recover some of the family time he missed as a younger man. None of that erases his comments about estrangement, but it does make the family history less tidy than a single quote suggests. Families have a persistent habit of refusing to fit into one convenient paragraph.
No public statement from Daniel or Sophie was reported following their father’s death. Stewart’s account therefore remains only one side of a private and evidently complicated relationship.
How did acting affect his family life?
Stewart married Sheila Falconer in 1966, before his international fame arrived through Star Trek: The Next Generation. They had Daniel and Sophie and divorced in 1990 after 24 years of marriage.
In his memoir, Stewart described the failure of his first two marriages as his greatest regret. He repeatedly accepted that his career had taken priority, rather than presenting family distance as an unfortunate mystery that simply happened around him.
His devotion to acting had deep roots. Stewart spoke publicly about growing up in a violent household and finding emotional refuge on stage. That background may provide context for why work became so central to his life, but when discussing his children, he focused on his own decisions and their consequences.
The career he placed first was extraordinary. Stewart became Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, while also maintaining an acclaimed stage career. His final screen appearance as Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday had already been filmed ahead of the movie’s scheduled December 18 release.
Stewart’s death and the tributes that followed
Associated Press reported that Stewart died at his Los Angeles home with his wife, Sunny Ozell, present. His spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, said he had experienced a “brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. The timing of his diagnoses was not disclosed.
Friends and co-stars remembered both the actor and the man behind the famous roles. Ian McKellen said Stewart “wore his heart on his sleeve” and was someone “to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.”
Hugh Jackman called him “a tremendous friend and man,” adding: “I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days.” William Shatner said Captain Picard “stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him.”
Stewart’s reflections on fatherhood sit uneasily beside those tributes, as he knew they would. He received admiration from millions, but remained candid that professional success could not repair every relationship it had displaced.
