Prince Harry says royal reconciliation matters more than continuing the disputes that have divided him from King Charles III and Prince William. In his first major interview since returning to the United Kingdom with his family, the Duke of Sussex said he wants the highly publicised rift resolved, even if others do not share that enthusiasm.

“Some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out,” Harry told GQ. “With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point.”

He acknowledged that old wounds do not simply disappear, but argued that people can change how they view past events. Harry said there was already enough turmoil in public and private life without keeping family conflicts alive indefinitely.

Why Harry returned to Britain

Harry’s comments followed his reported move back to the UK in August with Meghan Markle and their two children. The family had spent six years living in California after stepping away from senior royal duties in 2020, a departure widely labelled “Megxit.”

The return produced the expected surge of speculation about why the Sussexes had left the United States. Harry did not offer a dramatic new explanation, but said his attitude towards Britain had changed after years of conflict with parts of the British press.

He suggested that speaking publicly about his experiences had made the environment “slightly easier,” even if it had not stopped the behaviour he criticised. Harry said he hoped attitudes would continue to change.

“What happened back then was then,” he said, adding that the following six years had brought a continuation of those disputes and several battles he believed were necessary.

Harry has pursued multiple legal cases involving British newspaper publishers. He told GQ that he would like himself, his family and sections of the press to leave parts of that history behind and “work for the greater good.” A modest request, provided everyone agrees on what should be forgotten.

Harry defends telling his side

The duke has faced sustained criticism for discussing royal family tensions in public. His memoir, Spare, described his strained relationships with Charles and William, while the Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan covered the couple’s departure from royal life and their clashes with the media and palace system.

Harry said he found the criticism of those projects revealing because other people had long been able to shape the public account of his life.

“I find it fascinating because everybody else is allowed to tell their version of my story, but God forbid I should be able to tell the other side of it,” he said.

His latest remarks signal a desire to repair the family relationship, although he did not describe any agreement with Charles or William or set out practical steps towards reconciliation.
