Aran Murphy has been asked whether he would ever consider acting alongside his Oscar-winning father, Cillian Murphy, and the 19-year-old's wonderfully understated response suggests a family collaboration isn't exactly at the top of his to-do list.
In a video circulating online this week, the young Irish actor was asked about the possibility of sharing the screen with the Oppenheimer star.
"I don't know. Maybe, who knows… Not right now," he replied.
The exchange, shared on Reddit, attracted attention as Aran appeared in the spotlight surrounding the October 15 London Film Festival premiere of Klara and the Sun, his new film directed by Taika Waititi.
His answer might sound like a particularly casual way of turning down the chance to work with an Academy Award winner. But there's an important distinction: Aran hasn't ruled out appearing alongside his father. He simply isn't making any promises.
Cillian Murphy is already involved in his son's acting career
Despite the amusing response, Aran has previously spoken about the practical support he receives from his father as he establishes himself in the industry.
In an interview with British GQ published on October 16, the rising actor revealed that Cillian regularly helps him prepare audition tapes.
He also shared the central piece of acting advice his father has passed down: "Trust your instincts."
That detail makes the idea of Aran rejecting his father's involvement in his career rather less convincing. Whatever his feelings about appearing together in a film, the two already have a working relationship behind the scenes.
Cillian has also publicly praised his son's abilities. Speaking to the British Film Institute in 2025, the actor recalled being impressed by how naturally Aran performed on stage as a child, long before his recent television and film opportunities.
What has Aran Murphy starred in?
Aran is becoming a familiar face in his own right, with three significant screen projects arriving in the same period.
He plays Ruarí, the teenage son of Sharon Horgan's character Alex, in the HBO comedy Youth, which follows a divorced mother navigating relationships, family responsibilities and life with a son entering adulthood.
He also appears in War, the legal drama featuring Dominic West and Sienna Miller, and has a role in Klara and the Sun alongside Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams and Mia Tharia.
The latter, based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel, premiered at the London Film Festival on October 15 and is scheduled to reach cinemas later this month. The science-fiction drama follows an artificial companion who becomes part of a troubled family's life.
These aren't Aran's first acting experiences, either. He performed in the stage production Hamnet when he was 11 and later appeared in the independent film Lola.
In his GQ interview, Aran explained that he secured the roles in War and Youth after completing school in 2025, following his earlier casting in Klara and the Sun.
For someone only 19 years old, that's already a substantial collection of credits. And with his father helping him prepare auditions, there's little reason to interpret one light-hearted answer as evidence of tension between them.
For now, a Murphy father-and-son film remains a possibility rather than an announced project. Aran, meanwhile, has several performances through which audiences can judge his abilities without needing Cillian alongside him.
