Rockstar Games says a GTA 6 follow-up should not require another eight-year development cycle. The studio believes the engine, tools and production team assembled for its latest blockbuster will let it move faster on future projects. After spending most of a decade building that foundation, reusing it would be the unusually practical option.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Attention is understandably fixed on that release, but questions are already turning to what Rockstar plans to make afterward.
How GTA 6 could speed up Rockstar’s next project
Phil Hooker, head of development at Rockstar Games, told Bloomberg that the work completed for GTA 6 should make future production more efficient.
“The engine, the tools, and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” Hooker said. “I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content.”
That wording leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Hooker could be referring to expansions, a standalone release using the same technology, or a separate game developed on GTA 6’s technical base. Rockstar has not announced its next project, so anyone claiming to know exactly what this means is getting ahead of the studio.
Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier compared the possible approach with Rockstar’s transition from Grand Theft Auto 3 to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Vice City arrived less than a year after GTA 3 and reused its engine along with many existing assets.
A similar model could produce a substantial successor without requiring Rockstar to begin again from the technological equivalent of an empty folder. It would not necessarily be GTA 7. It could instead take the form of downloadable content, a standalone spin-off or another title built with the same systems.
Is Rockstar already planning another GTA game?
The company has confirmed no specific game beyond GTA 6. An updated version of GTA Online is widely expected, with reports suggesting it could arrive in 2027, but Rockstar has not formally detailed that release either.
There have also been rumours about a sequel to L.A. Noire. Those claims remain unconfirmed, and nothing in Hooker’s comments directly identifies that project.
Aaron Garbut, co-studio head of Rockstar North, said the studio made extensive changes while developing GTA 6 but does not intend to dismantle that work once the game ships.
“We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project,” Garbut said. “But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.”
That is the clearest indication that Rockstar wants its next production to inherit GTA 6’s technical foundation. It is not, however, confirmation of a particular sequel, expansion or release window. The main promise is simply that the studio does not expect another gap like the one between Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, and GTA 6 in 2026.
Why was GTA 6 delayed twice?
Rockstar also offered more detail about the delays that moved GTA 6 from its original 2025 window. The game was first pushed to May 2026 and later delayed again to November 19, 2026.
Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar’s studio director, recalled how Take-Two Interactive chief executive Strauss Zelnick reacted when told about the second delay.
“I think he said, ‘You’re kidding. Please tell me you’re kidding,’” Kolbe said. “But once we talked through why, he got it.”
She added that Rockstar was fortunate Zelnick accepted the reasoning rather than ordering the team to release the game regardless of its condition.
“A lot of people would say, ‘You’d just better figure out how to ship it.’ And we have been really, really lucky that we have not found ourselves in that place, because that happens to a lot of teams, and we’ve all played those games. It’s not great.”
One major problem involved the number of non-playable characters needed to support Rockstar’s ambitions. Writing and animating that population proved unrealistic within the earlier schedule. In response, the company established a Los Angeles studio dedicated entirely to creating non-playable characters. Apparently even imaginary residents generate real staffing requirements.
When will GTA 6 launch on consoles and PC?
Hooker said Rockstar changed the release date after determining that parts of the game would not meet the desired standard in time.
“I think when it became apparent that some areas weren’t going to make it, that’s when we decided to make the shift of date,” he said. “We could hit that schedule, but it won’t be the game we want to make.”
The current release schedule is:
- PlayStation 5: November 19, 2026
- Xbox Series X/S: November 19, 2026
- PC: Reportedly planned for early 2027, although Rockstar has not confirmed a date
For now, Rockstar’s next project remains unnamed and undefined. What the studio has made clear is that GTA 6 was designed as more than a single release. Its technology, production tools and expanded workforce are intended to support whatever comes afterward, ideally before another eight years pass.
