Not too long ago, Chris Evans seemed to make it abundantly clear that he was done playing Captain America, pouring his heart out via Twitter.
“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honour.
To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
It was heartbreaking. I was gutted, you were gutted, everyone and their mums were gutted. But that’s life; you get knocked down and have to pick yourself up again.
Later though, Evans sort of went back on his words at the ACE Comic Con in Chicago, saying:
“I should clarify that I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in some way a spoiler.
Regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing. That last day of filming was a very emotional day and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry.
I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect but I am neither confirming nor denying anything.”
So it’s hard to know where we stand in this saga. Is Evans staying? Is he going? Objectively I want him to stay forever but then it would also be awful to see him go stale in the role (a la Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack).
After that, John Cena tweeted this, making fans think that he was next to take the shield…

He could be in that picture. It’s hard to tell with Cena.
However, in an interview with USA Today, Infinity War and Avengers 4 co-director Joe Russo weighed in, saying that Evans’ Captain America had life in him yet…
“I think it was more emotional for him than it was us because he’s not done yet. I won’t explain what that means but fans will soon understand what I’m talking about.“
God knows what that could mean. Since at the end of Infinity War only the original Avengers and Rocket were left, people assumed that the next film would essentially be a last hurrah for the cast, before they pass the baton to newer heroes.
But if Evans isn’t done, what could that mean?
Since Captain America is going to be introducing the shape-shifting Skrulls to the MCU, this could maybe mean that while Evans won’t be playing Steve Rogers anymore, he will be playing an alien pretending to be him…
Just a thought.
Anyway, we’ll have to wait until next Spring until we get to see how this unfolds and I’m both excited and terrified.
