CARS, EXPLOSIONS, THE ROCK.
Yes, if you like those three things then you’ve come to the right place because the very first trailer for the Fast and the Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw has dropped and it looks…pretty over the top, I’m not going to lie.
The trailer gives us the first idea of the movie’s plot and it seems that Idris Elba’s villain Brixton is essentially a cyborg.
“I am human evolutionary change. Bulletproof, super human,” he ominously says in a voiceover.
This Elba cyborg looks to mess up the plans of Vanessa Kirby’s MI6 agent Hattie Shaw who then needs help from brother Deckard (Jason Statham) and Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) to take Brixton down.
The trailer looks to be fully embracing the 80s-style buddy tone while maintaining the craziness of the Fast franchise. Check it out below:
Told you it was crazy.
The trailer comes after The Rock recently teased the release of the first trailer on Instagram writing: “‘I’m what ya call a nice cold can of whup ass’ ~ Luke Hobbs. Get ready for our worldwide @HobbsAndShaw trailer debut on FRIDAY.
“#JasonStatham @IdrisElba & the kid stir up trouble & fun in the biggest showdown the Fast & Furious franchise has ever seen.”
Apparently, the idea of giving Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw their own film came about thanks to some on-set improvising during the last film, explains the writer and creator of the new spin-off, Chris Morgan.
“It wasn’t until [The Fate of the Furious], where we put them together in a prison, that we saw how well Jason and Dwayne bounced off each other,” he tells BBC News.
“And really, we have so many takes of the things they would say to each other off the cuff that were so funny, [the chemistry] was kind of undeniable.”
He adds: “We’ve always wanted to expand the Fast universe, there’s definitely more stories to be told there, stories that happened to these characters in between the major tent-pole adventures, and it just seems like Dwayne and Jason was the clear way to do it.”
The film was recently in the news after Dwayne Johnson revealed that Aquaman himself Jason Momoa could be featuring in a potential sequel.
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw will be released on August 2nd, 2019.
