Obi Wan and Jesus have a lot in common, when you think about it; they were both staunch followers of their particular religions (Jedi and Judaism), they were both teachers, they were both betrayed by people very close to them, they both sacrificed themselves for people they loved and they look pretty darn similar.

With that, it’s no surprise that meme-culture has turned Attack of the Clones-era Obi Wan into a bit of a cult Jesus. They just look very similar and if you take away the laser sword, I’d wager their behaviour is pretty similar.

A guy from Utah clearly thought that same, and thought he’d have a little Christmas laugh at the expense of his mum, who’s a big fan of Jesus (a Christian?). He did what any sensible son of devout Christians would do, and gifted them a framed portrait of Obi Wan Kenobi, saying it was of Jesus… and they fell for it.

Ryan Buchanan is the man in question, and posted what he’d done to Reddit, worried that the joke had maybe gone to far, since his mother apparently loved the gift and hung it up immediately.

He said that neither his mum, nor dad, Rashelle and Mike, were that into films so it makes sense that they wouldn’t have called the picture out for being a portrait of Scottish actor Ewan McGregor.

I’ve made a huge mistake. Mom loves her Jesus Christmas present and I’m not sure how to get out of this thing alive when she figures out.” he said on Reddit.

Ryan initially shared a video of his parents unwrapping the gift to YouTube but later deleted it. I guess he felt bad. He told Insider that his parents are followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This isn’t their first “Jesus” portrait, he revealed, saying:

It stuck out to me as looking like a picture we had growing up of Jesus.

I kind of chased that thought to, how funny would it be if my parents didn’t recognise who it was and actually hung it up on the wall.

I have always tried to get away with things or pull some pranks on my family members and this seemed perfect.

Ryan did eventually tell his dad what he’d done, who said that Rashelle thought something was a bit off about the portrait, as she apparently said ‘there is something off about that Jesus picture. I’m not totally sure I like it’.

Uh oh.
