Some of you might know Guy Ritchie from all that unsavoury Madonna business, but it’s his work as a director on films such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and RocknRolla that he’s most well known for.

Why he did that god-awful Swept Away and the completely unwatchable King Arthur film, I don’t know, because Guy’s bread and butter, tried and tested style of film-making is undoubtedly the gangster genre.

(Although the upcoming live-action version of Aladdin that he’s directing looks pretty magical.)

Beyond that, though, it looks like Ritchie is returning to his grittier, gangster roots with a project called Toff Guys.

Toff Guys is described as a darkly comic “blend of Sexy Beast and Downton Abbey.” The story is about a British drug lord attempting to cash out on his highly profitable weed empire by selling it off to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires.

And if that wasn’t exciting enough, Kate Beckinsale, Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Grant will be making up the cast, which is an interesting career choice for ol’ trusty Hugh who is usually playing some bumbling, hopeless-in-love bookshop owner.

(I realise that was like one film but still, he does seem to play the same kind of roles.)

In Toff Guys, Grant will play Fletcher, “a British gossip journalist with a reputation of going into people’s lives, and undoing them” which is interesting given his own well-documented run ins with the press.

Shame, though; I would have paid good money to see Hugh play a Mickey-esque fighting character like Brad Pitt did in Snatch.

Miramax have been confirmed to pick up the project which will go into production in the coming months.

We’ll keep you posted with any further details as and when they drop.

You. Are. Welcome.
