It goes without saying that as a pet owner you have a responsibility to look after your animal, which is precisely why I don’t own one.

I’m pretty sure my landlord wouldn’t allow it anyway, but even if he did there’s no way I’m responsible enough to care for another living thing. I can barely look after myself – caring for an animal would be impossible.

Thankfully, though, there are plenty of loving dog owners out there who treat their pooch like a member of their own family. Sometimes even better.

However, there are some who don’t deserve the unconditional love of their animals in the first place, like this next bloke who tried to abandon his dog on the side of a road.

The video, taken in California, shows an unidentified man leaving his black dog on a road by Lake Ming in Bakersfield as the confused pet tries to play with him.

When the dog refuses to leave his side, the man walks back to his car and gets behind the wheel.

The animal puts its paws on the driver’s side door, trying to get in, but drives off and leaves the poor thing chasing after it.

That is genuinely heartbreaking; I don’t know how someone could be so cold.

And how did it get to the point where you felt that was the only option? Take it to a shelter or give it to someone else who will look after it properly.

The footage was recorded by Stephen Sage Silver, who was sitting in another car watching the incident go down.

In the video he can be heard saying: ‘Hell no, that’s your dog man. That’s f**ked up. This guy is dumping his dog right here.’

He added that the person “tried to get into a physical altercation” with him and that “as he drove off he was yelling: “It’s your dog not mine.”‘

Bizarre.

You’ll be glad to know that Kern County Animal Services have said the animal has been picked up and is being looked after while they investigate the incident.

Hopefully they’ll find out who the man is and prevent him from having dogs again.
