Online dating is hard; you’ve got a small profile to go off and a couple of pictures of some girl with her mates on an elephant in Thailand.
And most profiles don’t give much away either, apart from the usual, general throwaway lines like ‘don’t even know why I’m on this’, ‘got a family gathering coming up and need someone to go with’, ‘puppies, pizza, travelling.’
WHO DOESN’T LIKE PUPPIES, PIZZA AND TRAVELLING?!
In the past, I’ve always gone for the plain and simple ‘hi, how’s it’s going.’ Dangerously boring, I know, but hey, at least I’ll never appear in an article like this.
That’s because Instagram account beam_me_up_softboi has been collecting all the awkward messages guys have send on Tinder and other social media, and boy are they cringe-worthy.
The page was set up by Manchester student Iona, who coined the phrase “softboy” to describe men who want to appear like “good guys” – even if that’s not always the case.
She told Dazed:
“A softboy is the guy on Tinder who chain-smokes rollies (this is a big part of his personality), quotes David Lynch’s filmography, and is definitely, really, 100 per cent a staunch feminist.
“The softboy lures you in with seemingly interesting conversation, a ‘good guy’ attitude and his speeches about gender equality – cool! – before eventually needing some time to ‘figure himself out’, then ghosting you, all the while continuing to watch all of your Instagram stories.”
Anyway, some of the messages are ridiculous, and when I say that, I mean hilariously embarrassing.
Here’s some of the best. Or worst, I suppose…
God, some of these don’t half make your skin crawl.
Come on men of the world -raise your game.
