Tim Allen – who voices Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story – was the one to reveal that Keanu Reeves would be playing a mystery role in the upcoming Toy Story 4.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Tim Allen said:

New guys are in it. Keanu Reeves has got a great part in it. Inside story, even the fun, gentle guy that he is, even he said, ‘This sounds too much like Buzz Lightyear’.

And his character does have an edge to that.

Immediately we all wanted to know what kind of character would be derivative of John Wick himself, and would he be friend or foe? I’d love to see an assassin toy wandering around, being dark and moody, but I’m not sure that would fit in with the whole aesthetic of Toy Story.

Reeves recently revealed more about the character and how he got the job, saying that he was even allowed to bring his own creative license in…

In an interview with Collider, he said:

I got a call which was really cool out the blue from the lovely people at Pixar and the creators of this number, this edition, or continuation of the story.

They pitched the character to me and then we spoke and they allowed me to kind of riff on it.

It’s going to be an emotional ride, according to Woody himself, Tom Hanks, who said on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show:

It was the first time that we were going to be recording the end of the movie, and Toy Story [4] is going to have an impactful ending.

The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it.

But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me. When I realised what they were going for, I realised, ‘Oh, this is a moment in history’.”

I’m not sure anyone is prepared for this.
