Chris Evans went from fiery Fantastic Four member to Captain America: The First Avenger right before our very eyes, but it’s really only one of those once-in-a-lifetimes roles he’ll be remembered for.

The Captain America trilogy is arguably one of the best things about the MCU; The First Avenger took a a while to be properly appreciated while Winter Soldier and Civil War were huge successes and ultimately put Cap’ in our hearts for good.

His role in Avengers: Infinity War was also pretty epic, returning to Wakanda to lead Earth’s forces against the might of Thanos, with many (including me) thinking it might be his final farewell as Steve Rogers.

*spoiler alert* Cap survives and will return in Avengers 4 next year, but with Evans tweeting a not-so-cryptic message recently, it looks certain that his time in the red, white and blue is finally over.

With it all but confirmed that Evans is leaving the MCU, attention has immediately turned to who will replace him when Marvel inevitably revives the character for a new film.

Well, according to Evans’ former co-star, Frank Grillo – who played Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War – the studio could go in a new direction altogether.

In an interview with Larry King the actor said:

I don’t know, but there’ve been rumors that [the next] Captain America could be African American. It could be a woman. You know? So they’re looking.

It’s interesting that he’s actually acknowledged the rumours that Marvel Studios is looking for more diverse faces for the role.

It’s also noteworthy that he’s essentially confirmed that Evans won’t be appearing as Cap in any films after Avengers 4 (which we basically knew already).

You certainly wouldn’t bet against the studio backing either a woman or an African American to play Captain America in any future film; we’ve already seen the huge success of Black Panther, led by Chadwick Boseman, while the upcoming Captain Marvel film with Brie Larson promises to be another huge blockbuster.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens though because before all that there’s still unfinished business with our current Cap.

Like me, people are struggling to let go of the idea of Evans playing that walking, talking American flag:

Please, please, please give him the send-off he deserves.
