A baby shower is a highlight for many mums-to-be, but it’s claimed Palace aides “rolled their eyes” at Meghan Markle’s event.
She threw a star-studded baby shower for Archie, and a royal biographer claims Palace staff were “horrified.”
The Duchess of Sussex went to New York weeks before Archie was due to celebrate.
It took place at The Mark Hotel in Manhattan, and the likes of Serena Williams hosted the event, joined by Amal Clooney and others.
However, Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie claims the flash baby shower left aides unimpressed at Buckingham Palace.
“Rolled Their Eyes”
He told Channel 4 documentary A Very Royal Baby: From Cradle to Crown: “I remember speaking to a palace aide at the time who rolled their eyes.”
“They were horrified that something so common was happening within the House of Windsor.”
Ingrid Seward, a former royal author, also called the celebration “trashy”.
She said: “They [Meghan’s celebrity friends] walked in through the front entrance carrying these enormous bags from the most expensive shops in New York.
“Crowds gathered because they were all celebrities, there was Gayle King from CBS, Serena Williams and Amal Clooney.”
Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, suggested flying to New York “mid-term” would have been “dangerous”.
Finding Freedom authors wrote: “While the trip had been a hit with Meghan, senior courtiers back in the UK were spitting out their morning tea when they saw her lavish baby shower thrown by friends turn into a media circus with what looked like carefully stage-managed paparazzi walks of the duchess in big black sunglasses from her hotel to her car and a laundry list of inside party details reported by US press,” they wrote.
“Meghan was often criticised for being too Hollywood, meant too flashy.
“Especially for the reserved aesthetic of the monarchy.”
Meghan is now pregnant with their second child, a girl, due to be born in the summer.
Tensions are said to still be running high for Prince Harry with his family.
They fell out after his bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. He claimed his brother and father were “trapped” in the Royal life.
He travelled back to the UK to attend the funeral of his Grandfather, the Duke Of Edinburgh.
However, he’s said to have been shocked by the “icy” reception he received.
There are now rumours he won’t come back to the UK as planned in July.
He’s supposed to return for the unveiling of a statue in honour of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
Radar reports that Prince Harry was “rattled” by the negativity from the Royal Family and the press.
“It is very possible that Harry does not return to the UK for the event,” insiders claimed.
“The cold shoulder Harry received at Prince Philip’s funeral is not helping. Harry was rattled not only by his family’s reaction but also by the negative media coverage he received during his short stay.
“Now he may bow out of the upcoming trip altogether.”
A source reportedly told the Radar: “Harry is demanding the Meghan be part of the official ceremony.
“She will not be able to attend in person because of the couple’s second child, but Harry is pushing to have comments prepared by Meghan included in the event or a video message featuring his wife released to the media the same day the brothers unveil the statue.”
The statue was announced in 2017.
A joint statement from William and Harry said at the time: “It has been 20 years since our mother’s death and the time is right to recognise her positive impact in the UK and around the world with a permanent statue.
“Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy.”
Fans will have to wait and see.
