No one could have predicted the meteoric rise in popularity of the John Wick franchise. Another Keanu Reeves flick where he punches and kicks people? Put it on the pile.

But the films were surprisingly good, with great direction and cinematography aiding the weird plot to no end.

With that, it’s no surprise that Netflix hopped on the bandwagon, and made Polar, starring Mads Mikkelsen.

The plot reads:

The world’s top assassin, Duncan Vizla, aka The Black Kaiser (Mads Mikkelsen), is settling into retirement when his former employer marks him as a liability to the firm. Against his will, he finds himself back in the game going head to head with an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers who will stop at nothing to have him silenced.”

His former employee is Little Britain co-creator Matt Lucas, by the way…

Watch the trailer.

I mean, with the best will in the world, it doesn’t look very good.

There’s that cliche line of asking an ex-killer what his job was and then him replying with something vaguely related to killing people for money, i.e. cleaning, exterminating, life insurance. This time it’s “the funeral business”.

And then there’s the moment from Thor Ragnarok

Also, I do hope that the whole film isn’t edited with that awful split-screen effect that we see about ten times in the trailer. We get it, it came from a graphic novel; it does not translate well in film. The tried that with the Hulk film 2003 and that was part of the reason it was terrible.

Anyway, the choreography looks interesting the fights so maybe it will be good.
