A Ryanair passenger who was filmed hurling racist abuse at an elderly lady on board a flight has been investigated by police who visited his home.

David Mesher went viral recently over an incident on a flight from Barcelona to Stansted Airport where he can be heard calling 77 year-old Delsie Gayle a “ugly black b******”, and shouting “don’t talk to me in a foreign language you stupid ugly cow” when she spoke to him in English with a Jamaican accent.

Yesterday, neighbours identified the man as former railway worker David Mesher, 70, from Yardley Wood, Birmingham while describing him as a “weirdo” and a “bully”.

Since then, officers from West Midlands Police, who said they were assisting Essex Police in their investigation, attended the sheltered accommodation where Mr Mesher lives to speak to him about the incident.

Two officers arrived at the sheltered retirement housing block, but made no arrests and left less than an hour later on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Mesher has refused to apologise for his shocking rant and told Mailonline “go away, there’s nothing to say,” when they confronted him.

A spokeswoman for Optivo, which runs the sheltered accommodation, said:

“We do not condone abusive behaviour in any form.

“As this matter is now being handled by the police we are unable to make any further comment at this stage.”

Although Mesher has never been married and has no children, a relative who chose not to be identified, told the Telegraph they were disowning Mr Mesher and that they hoped he is jailed if found guilty of the crime.

“I saw that video and I would have stepped in.

“Someone on that plane should have done something. I don’t care if he’s blood. He should be put in a Spanish jail, I reckon.”

On Wednesday, Essex Police said:

“Our officers will continue to provide assistance where necessary throughout the course of this case.”
