It’s that time of year again, folks! The leaves are turning orange and brown, there’s a chill in the air, you can see your own breath and companies are racing to see who can make the most inappropriate Halloween costume on the market.
Previously we’ve had the chance to dress up as the dentist who killed Cecil the lion, Caitlin Jenner in her Vanity Fair cover and sexy Donald Trump and things are getting a bit more real now.
Personally – not that I dress up much on Halloween (neither me nor my friends are cool enough to go to parties) – if I have to, I’ll play it safe and go as Ash Ketchum from Pokémon. I’ve got the gear, and if I get told I have to spook it up a bit, I’ll add a cape and fangs. What’s not to love about Vampire Ash?
Regardless of what you think of that costume, it’s not offensive; and certainly not as offensive as the aforementioned dress-ups. But those three costumes have nothing on the sheer short-sighted offensiveness of the Oscar Pistorius suit.
You’ll remember that the famous double-amputee athlete shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, back in 2013, which resulted in a lengthy trial, with Pistorius adamant that he had his girlfriend confused with an intruder.
The athlete was sentenced to 13 years and five months for murder last year, having previously been serving a five year house arrest for manslaughter.
So you’d have thought that taking advantage of that would be a bad thing, and it is, but that didn’t stop Jokers’ Masquerade in Luton selling a costume of him for £23.
The costume features a vest made to look like the 2012 Paralympics track athletics jersey, with the words “Blade Gunner” written across the chest, referencing Pistorius’ nickname, “Blade Runner”.
This is teamed with some black and silver boots, meant to look like the blades an amputee might wear, some sunglasses, and a gun.
People were obviously mad, with one person taking to Twitter to say:
“Reeva Steenkamp had her life taken from her in horrific circumstances…and so this costume company decides to tackle ‘political correctness’ and ‘pushing boundaries’ with a costume of the man who is serving 15 years for her death. I actually have no words“
And another saying it was awful…
The costume shop has a section for “bad taste” outfits on the site, prefaced with the disclaimer:
“WARNING! If you are easily offended, our Bad Taste Costumes may not be for you.
Here at Jokers’ Masquerade we decided to be a little rebellious by compiling this collection of wonderfully inappropriate costumes for adults, for those who like to push the boundaries. Our offensive fancy dress costumes are perfect for those with a black sense of humour.“
