Coming to America, these days, is a bit of a cult film.

It was one of many titles that made Eddie Murphy the household name he is today and it gave us this pretty good reaction GIF…

31 years later, you’d assume that the story was all wrapped up in a neat little bow, but no, there’s set to be more. The original tells the tale of:

Prince Akeem is the prince of a wealthy African country and wants for nothing, except a wife who will love him in spite of his title. To escape an arranged marriage, Akeem flees to America accompanied by his persnickety sidekick, Semmi, to find his queen.

Disguised as a foreign student working in a fast food restaurant, he romances Lisa, but struggles with revealing his true identity to her and his marital intentions to his king father.”

The sequel has long been talked about but now we finally have a release date, and that’s the August 7th of 2020.

Not long then.

Eddie Murphy is due to return as Prince Akeem, but there are currently big ol’ doubt over the likes of James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, John Amos and Arsenio Hall.

So far it doesn’t sound like much of a sequel, but we’re holding out hope.

The news was broken when Murphy released a statement, saying:

After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming To America 2 is officially moving forward.

We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite [Is My Name], and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.

If you’re wondering what Craig Brewer’s done, he was responsible for the remakes of Footloose and Black Snake Moan. Hmmm.

Meanwhile, the script will come courtesy of Kenya Barris (Black-ish), who said:

Craig’s ability to create a distinct cinematic world with each of his films is not only impressive but also what made him exactly the voice and vision we needed to bring this story to life.”

Looking forward to this!
